After having a series of discussions with people, both in and out of the industry, there's been a lot of different perceptions on what a placement is exactly. Just wondering what you guys would consider a placement to be.
Discuss.

i would say its a spot on a major artist or even indy artists album or if your music appeared in a commercial video game movie tv etc. thats my opinon...ive seen people call gettin the same song on 5 diff mixtapes as a placement or even if a major or artist with buzz is featured on a song using there beat even tho its not the major artists song... from what ive seen people are quick to call anything a placement lately

If at all possible letks try to give the word 'placement' a dictionary definition if youwill

I initially thought it meant something similar to a work placement. Like you work with the artist in the studio.

Placement: n. Having one or more of your tracks used commercially. Whether it be used by a major artist's album or mixtape, TV, movies, video games or any other means of media.

I think.

^^^That about sums it. To add on, even if it's an artist down the street. it's a "placement" if your trackis used, just not a "major placement", "television/movie placement", ect.

Does it not need to be heard by a larger scale than just a few people? If I gave my beat to an artist down the street, but it doesn't even get radio play and he just plans on using it for his mixtape (that wont be in stores) would that still be considered a placement?

The above definition is too vague. We should concentrate more on the definition and origin of the world itself, the word includes 'PLACE' as in *placing* something, "I submitted and placed the song onto the album".

Now if a film director comes to me and says "I've heard your work and I want you to work for my film", then that's not a PLACEment, it's a job offer, and the director is my client.

A placement constitutes submitting and placing your work among competitors onto a preferably profit promising project.

You're welcome to further work that out, I wrote that on the spot, I might come back later, gotta go now.

Placement - When your track is put in the position for money to be made from it.

Im my opinon a placement is something released on a major label or on a major indie label, and also video games/TV/Film.

oooh - interesting points!

can we agree upon a solid definition?

Yeah, just not a placement of any importance, lol. Just my opinion.

But if MC Git Bizy and Lil Phat Boi do a track to my song and anyone anywhere is talking about it...it's a "placement in the eyes of the beholder.

That don't mean I'd walk into a meeting with an Atlantic A&R yapping about how I got a placement with those dudes, lol.

i thought it meant have a major artist BUY Your track......use it, connect with you, have a beneficial relationship with that artist

but i've been looking at some producers....they claim a placement if that rapper is rapping over your tags so hey.... i wouild too lol

My local scene > than chasing spots on major records. I haven't given up but I won't actively seek placements any more. Maybe once in a while I'll submit some beats though, who knows.

Soundclick cats are no real "artists".

placement = major act or well known indie.

Placement- having one's work featured or used in any commercial or noncommercial form of media

Pretty much what deranged said, the commercial would be your movies, video's, well known artist ect. The non commercial would be your local artist or any artist who doesn't have an established name yet. Generally when the word placement is used though its describing the commercial form.

And the award for most confusing thread......

lol@ all of these incorrect and unnecessarily complexed answers.

A placement, for a producer, should only be defined as: You made a beat, found a client for it,and sold/licensed/gave it to him. His status as an artist is irrelevant.

I've received hella beats from members on this site including J.Black,F00t,Ngage and etc; all of those should count as placements. Ya'll dudes are too caught up into being industry when most of you aren't even really in it. Get your money and stop waiting on other "producers" to validate what it is to you.

You sell beats? You've placed them.
