Rap star Twista leaves daughter waiting, wanting

August 29, 2004

BY MARY MITCHELL SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST

Before Twista became the latest rap sensation and a platinum artist, he was Carl Terrell Mitchell, a young rap wannabe from the West Side who, in 1991, married Rashida Mitchell.

About three years later, the couple brought Aaliyah Mitchell into the world. They separated in 1996, and in 1999, Rashida filed for divorce. She now alleges that Twista, who is not related to me, has been so clever at hiding his assets that the case has languished ever since.

"He would come in court with phony check stubs showing that he made about $2,000 a month. The court ordered Twista to pay me $100 a week in 1999," his wife said.

About a year ago, the court increased Twista's child support payment to $460 a month.

"Right now he is two months behind," Rashida Mitchell said.

According to Jeffery Leving, Twista's lawyer, "the check is in the mail."

"This man is a loving father," Leving told me. ''He is not a malfeasance or deadbeat parent. He told me that his daughter means the world to him."

Meanwhile, when Aaliyah started school last week, Rashida didn't have the money to buy the girl new clothes.

Janice Boback, Rashida's lawyer, says her firm, Anderson & Boback, came into the divorce case a year ago.

"The case has stalled because we've been unable to get the information about his income and business affairs," Boback said. "Obviously he has been living high on the hog, and we are trying to find his resources. Rashida is having a hard time because she is living on her own and is a single parent. Actually, $460 doesn't even pay the rent. She just wants what is best for her daughter."

Leving, who spoke to me while Twista was on another line, claims the rap star has regular visitation with his daughter at his mother's house. But I spoke to the 10-year-old girl, and she says she hasn't seen her father since her ninth birthday last year when he took her to the zoo.

Scrapes up ticket money

And although Twista said he visited with his daughter at the WGCI Big Jam IV a few months ago, the event actually took place in December 2003. Aaliyah's mother showed me her receipt for $144 for two tickets.

"She begged him to go to the concert because she wanted to meet Beyonce and Lil' Bow Wow, and she had never seen her father on stage," Mitchell said. "I scraped up the money to buy the tickets because I didn't want her to be disappointed, and I got one of my friends to take her backstage. Twista wouldn't even take her to the dressing room."

Right now, Aaliyah is a little girl any father would be proud to call his daughter. Last year, she earned straight A's in fourth grade at a school in the Valley View School District, where she is a member of the school's soccer team.

"Twista doesn't participate in her life at all," his wife said. "She goes to school and tells her friends that Twista is her dad, and they don't believe her. All of her friends see him in videos, and they think she is lying. Kids can be cruel."

'Entitled to share in lifestyle'

"As the daughter of Twista, this girl is certainly entitled to share in the lifestyle that her dad has, and that is what we are trying to do now," Boback said. "She is being cut off from what she is entitled to. She wants very desperately to have a relationship with her father, and unfortunately that just hasn't happened."

Twista has children outside of his marriage, and these mothers have not called me to complain. Rashida said she decided to air this matter because her daughter is so unhappy.

"Basically, I want people to know that my daughter does exist," she said. "Her father is Twista although he has not given her the life that she deserves. His daughter is a beautiful little girl and well-mannered. I don't think she deserves to be disrespected and abandoned by him."

On Aug. 18, Aaliyah turned 10. She got a phone call from her father, but no gifts -- not even a birthday card.

Leving, a father's rights pioneer, argues that he presented Twista for his deposition and it is up to Rashida's lawyers to figure out where his money is.

"Right now there are issues, and Twista is out of town a lot. He didn't show up for his daughter's skating party because these parents have a bad relationship," Leving said.

But is this right? Should Twista's daughter be forced to produce a newspaper article to prove to her friends that her father is a successful rap star?

Sooner or later, Rashida and Twista will settle their differences and move on.

But no daughter should be made to look like a liar when she brags about her father.

This is a fuking shame-dude is in videos, shoe commercials, roking ice, gators and driving lamborghini's but won't pay for school supplies. LOSER!

So everything you read is true? And...Do you know how much twista is REALLY making?

back in 1994 the good doctor was a dead beat dad, how do i know? my mom worked in the DA'S office and since he wasnt paying child support dre had his license taken away and my mom photo copied his license and brought the copy home asking if andre young was dr dre because she thought he looked familiar.

he's a few months behind and now he's a deadbeat dad? man please she aint have school clothes the mom needs to hustle too! in 99 what if his earnings amounted to $2000/week then hell $460/month is fair compared to others.

That's the kind of **** that makes celebrity's wanna get out of the lifestyle--even if it is true (i doubt it) it ain't none of our business he is famous for his music and that's why we like him and you have no idea of the circumstances just that you read it out of some article if you believe everything you read then your living a fantasy world son

There are 2 sides to every story mane, dont always believe the hype...

Don't know how true the story is, but the article is definitely real. It's there on the site and in the newspaper.

I wish u were his child so you could starve.

Haha! Anyways, true or not, any person that doesn't take care of their innocent children are p*ssies and I have no respect for them. Just my opinion.

Thank u kev J and JB Playa. You all see the light. Why did dude post a bogus link? It's on the website and the newspaper today! We know damn well Twista is making more than 2 G's a month. His advance for this album was 1 million due to the bidding war on him so come the fuk on. A million and your child is strugglin. All the negative reply's on here just demonstrate their ignorance to the point where they don't believe it was R. Kelly on the tape and would deem him harmless-thus letting their daughters date him. Having a top 10 hit generates hundreds of thou's and if an #1 song-millions of dollars every year. Get over-DUDE GOT MONEY and is BOGUS!

we are talking about 2 g's a month in 1999. sounds to me like the mother is trying to capitalize of his newfound success. so come the fuk on why go to the papers? the reason she gives is so that people will know that twista is the father. come the fuk on what kinda reason is that. you know she was on the sidelines just waiting for a nigga to blow. who says he aint takin care of the daughter.......the mother? come the fuk on of course she's gonna say that **** in the papers it all helps her case to get more money. damn and i wasnt supposed to post in this thread again. but you callin people out on some ignorant sh!t.

I do not condone negativity of any kind...but do you know the real story...do you believe everything you read or see in the MEDIA??? A lot of times things are not true, facts get distorted...All that I am saying is there are 2 sides to every story...If the story is true, then Twista is bad father and he is negating his responsibility but what if this is all bullish, then what????

Whats up with all this disrespect and name-calling, mane...relax...

Thank you isolated......that's what I was saying. You can't believe everything in the media. Nupe.....do your really believe that Twista really saw that 1 million advance? That **** was probably cut so many different ways that nigga didn't see ****.

He stacks enough bundles to cop that brand new 2004 Lamborgini Gallardo a couple of weeks ago. Checkout the latest issue of The Source.

Couldn't agree more! Just cuz you get an advance small or big doesn't mean you gonna get all of it! Out of that you gots to pay producers, recording,videos,etc...C'mon guys this is basic music businness ish...

Don't forget the taxes... it'll take that million down to a little over 500 G's right off the bat.

That's his personal business though. I listen to his music. That's what most people should care about. I'm pretty sure he's not the only deadbeat dad.

Michael Jordan cheated on his wife left and right until she hired those private eyes to follow him. Nobody bashed him that much. It didn't even phase his career.
