turntable problem

I'm having a problem with my turntable where the sound will come in out and as I play a record. Like I will start it and it will play fine but then you hear a little bit of static and it begins to get lower and lower until it does not play anymore. If I bang the table its sitting on or even the side of the table a little bit the sound sometimes will come back in. I'm not sure what this means that it responds to the banging, maybe something is just loose? any ideas are appreciated, thanks

I would start by looking at the cartridge and the head shell if it affects both the left and right channels together.

Also check the RCA cables connections. Some people disconnect them by pulling on the wire insulation and no the plug itself. This will pull the wires right out of the inside of the RCA plugs.
