Tool - Subliminal messages?

The following appeared in a newsletter from Tool a few years ago

It seems that even the recent nomination of Tool's 'Lateralus' for a TEC (Technical Excellence & Creativity) award has not gone without its little share of controversy. According to my source (an insider at 'Mix' Magazine which will present the 18th annual award for excellence in audio this October), there was initially some hesitation by at least one member of the 'foundation' for what he described as a subliminal message involving "the vilest kind of ceremony that was ingeniously encoded on the CD." Supposedly this barely audible message, which was detected by certain methods known to recording engineers, refers to a type of ritual cannibalism that some of the band's more occult-oriented fans believe to be the underlying theme of Lateralus. (NOTE: These same people also believe that the most carefully-guarded secret of this rite, including the correct method of dissection, is openly displayed for those with eyes to see in the Alex Grey artwork for the CD. Similarly, they point to certain tee-shirt designs put out by the band; those with incriminating names like, 'Bone-Layer', 'Skinless', and 'Nerve Endings' as further proof of this macabre banquet.)

im not sure if anyone realises this(although most TooL fans probably do)is that TooL do have an appreciation for the dark lords work and ways...they arent Christians and some of thier members do worship Satan....which explains why they are so intelligent and geniusly creative....amung the 9 satanic statements are :Intelligence is the greatest virtue, stupidity is a sin...and creativity cannot be limited which fits the band perfectly so if they are putting satanic subliminals in thier music...then good,im glad

I don't want to get into a big religious discussion, but I've never heard of any religion that says the stupider you are, the better.

While it is possible I wouldnt be too quick in assuming that any Tool members are Satanists. Justin is the only possible one and that’s mostly because of his statement at the Grammy's a few years ago when he thanked Satan but I think he said it to shock people. Danny’s dad and grandfather were both Masons and it is a fact that every occult religion i.e. Thelema (Crowley's religion), Wicca, Hermeticism, Rosicrucianism, and many more are all more or less different parts of Freemasonry cut and pasted together. I'm sure some might disagree with me but nonetheless it is true. My opinion is that they are followers of their own “religion” like a lot of people. I think they borrow ideas and truths from different religions and tailor them to suit their taste. Most of the lyrical themes have a lot in common with “TAOISM” However I wouldn’t call them Taoists because every other religion has some of the same ideas as Taosim, you just have to dig a little deeper. ( BTW I’m not Taoist.) Danny is into Crowley which has Hindu elements and Adam is supposedly a Scientologist. I’m not sure about Keenan he doesn’t discuss his beliefs very often but once said in an interviiew that every religion is the same, just tailored for different races and cultures. Justin in my opinion is atheist OR only cares about being cool, not that that’s wrong. However it is POSSIBLE that they do in fact follow Satan and trick people into thinking they don’t. Heres a link if anyone cares. It has every interview with TOOL ever been published and they discuss a lot of their beliefs in many of them.

I listen to Tool I also here these things I try to decide for myself what it means.

That's a really interesting concept. I'm pretty sure a lot of bands have subliminal messages, but it's just that we don't figure them out. I'm just wondering that if you listened to Tool or any other band with subliminal messages on a consitant basis, would it actually have an affect on you?

:monkey:

to me, the members of TOOL most closely resemble Thelemites(search for Thelema and Crowley on google if you don't know what it is.)

They just want people to think for themselves, which is what we should do.

I don't think they put "subliminal" messages, but there are many songs where maynard will wisper stuff that is barely audible, such as in The Patient on Lateralus you can hear him say "and I still may...(sigh)..I still may.." near the end of the song.

just interpret the lyrics and imagery for yourself. read the suggested books, you may just find something out..

I would definetely have to disagree with Mackie about any of them "worshipping" satan as a god, they may look up to him as a CHARACTER in a STORY but they don't worship something that really isn't even there. Satan is nothing more than a judeo-christian fable.....which you would know if you would take their advice and question all authority and think for yourself. Satanists don't worship Satan either, they merely see satan as a character which they model themselves after.

So if you want to really understand a lot of the ideaology of TOOL I would suggest reading up on The Occult . Check out Magick in Theory and Practice by Crowley and pretty much anything on Tarot and the Kabbalah which comes up quite a bit on Lateralus.

as for aenima I would just tell you to take a buttload of drugs and kill your entire family;)

Anyone listen to Stinkfist and use your Equalizer (if you have MusicMatch go to Options>Player>Equalizer) and slide the 600 MHz frequency all the way up and hear for yourself some of the sounds on there. Tell me what you think. TOOL says that when they track their songs they use themselves as a channel. This is what Danny had to say in Interview in The February 1997 issue of Modern Drummer magazine:

"It's not like a psyching-up thing, it's more of a meditation,
where I try to remove myself from the room and bring things in that will
help bring out as much of the subconscious as possible. That's why we
brought in the huge, old Enochian magic board that sits behind my kit,
just so we could try to set up the proper mental and spiritual environment
to record and create in. So the music ends up just being a postcard, a
picture of what happened in that room on that day. "
Sound like a case for subliminal messages? You be the judge

Heres the link if someone wants to read it themselves

I agree with everything Saytan said except the part about Satan being Jueo-Christianity fable but I wont get into that here and also when you said that if someone wants to understand TOOL's ideology they should check out Magick in Theory and Practice....thats great but who's to say thats TOOL's ideology? The only way any of us can get even a glimpse of their ideology is by reading what they say in publice ESPECIALLY their interviews and then reading the right materials... you have to go to the source first.....but I'm not telling anyone dont read Magick in Theory and Practice, reading is never a bad suggestion especially in this day and age....and plus it is a good book in its own right

they(BMB) mention Magick in Theory and Practice, Magick Without Tears and Crowley's Book 4 as well as basically everything else in the newsletter if you read them all

other people they are interested in are: C.G. Jung,Kenneth Grant, A.O. Spare, etc.

a lot of psychology, science and ritual magick. most of the ritual magick stems from Crowley's work, which anyone who is familiar with it would notice.

but the way they mix religious symbols from different religions kind of has a Chaotian sort of feel to it.

You're right. I think Danny and Blair are into Crowley and Enochian Magick more than the other members though, but thats just my opinion. As for the rest of TOOL I don't know, I think they borrow ideas from different religions like you said. I would recommend reading Morals & Dogma as well as books on Magick, and then a lot of what they say makes more sense, especially on Lateralus.

yeah, I'm relatively sure that Danny and Blair are Thelemites, Maynard and Adam could quite possibly just be all around students of the occult, but Justin from what I understand is just interested in it.

another cool thing in case anyone didn't know

Aeon Blue was the name of one of Adam's dogs, that's where Eon Blue Apocalypse comes from I think(but he died:( )..

I listen to tool all the time. i was wondering if there are any subliminal messages placed in the songs by the band? if so, what are they?

the reason i decided to ask this question is that last night i had one of the worst nightmares ever. i was singing "46 & 2" over and over again in the dream, and then i heard this demonic voice say a word a can't remember. and i woke up and thought my heart was gonna explode it was beating to so hard and fast. pretty weird.

thanks.

Have you been taking too much DMT?, (reference Rosetta Stoned). Anyways. The Easter egg song for 10,000 Days is when you link up Wings For Marie Pt. 1 with Viginte Tres it is the same legnth as 10,000 Days (Wings Pt. 2). What you do is play the aformentioned linked song and play it as the same time as 10,000 days and you get the hidden song. It is 3 songs linked up and it works out perfectly, pretty amazing!!!

I don't think they (intentionally) have a deeper meaning... But it is still interesting to look at. Check out songmeanings dot net (dunno if we are alowed to post links?) Tool is a great band, so a lot of people have some interesting stuff put up in there... Definitely worth taking a look at. Enjoy ;-)

Wow some of these people are rediculous. Die eyer von satan is a recipe for deviled eggs spoken in german. if you look for anything youll find it there purposly or not. IE some beatles tracks have a lot of "Back masking" and all that jazz. To me if your minds weak and accepts subliminal messaging then you derserve to lfesruor llik. its natures natural selection. Now breed lol

die eier von satan

die eier von satan is not a recipe for deviled eggs I speak german fluently and it is a recipe but it is for hash spiked dough balls
