hello! i've been wanting to learn how to mix & scratch for a long time now and i wanted to find a relatively fail safe method that wouldn't set me back too much if i decided it wasn't for me...

i'd like to used time coded vynil with real turntables and a mixer, but i'd like to keep the costs down, and hardware at a minimum.

i know that virtualdj can use time coded vynil through the audio in ports on a computer, but i'm wondering how well this works...

anyway, in short, my question is what turntable(s) should i get? i know it needs to be drirect drive, and have a pretty powerful motor, but what else should i look for?

i don't know ish about Final Scratch or Serato, but have you thought about some Numark CDX's?

i have thought about those and i watched the demo for em...and if i had the cash i'd buy those in a heartbeat. but i just don't.

i was thinking that maybe a pair of numark tt200s would fit the bill...one now to start practicing scratches with, then one a little later...

or, maybe a pair of gemini pt2000s or XL500s would be a lot cheaper and be good for me to start out with...

The whole Serato/FS route is for people who are so accustomed to mixing with vinyl that they need to be eased into the digital world through that medium. In other words, I've never heard of someone who doesn't have an existing vinyl collection (or existing vinyl DJing skills) going the time-coded vinyl route.

If you're looking for a cheap way to see if DJing is for you, I'd strongly suggest Traktor:

i already know about traktor, i've researched this quite extensively, but i wanted some opinions...

my big thing is control. i hate those damned software synths, i can't bringmyself to use a mouse to control it and i don't think i'd be able to with traktor...

i have heard some ok things about that dm2 being used with traktor, but would i be able to transer to, say, the cdx after using that? i just seems like it would take a lot of getting used to having the TT spinning instead of just waiting for me...that and the dm2 just looks like utter crap...

any other contollers you can think of?

i actually have the korg microkontrol and i love it...

i'll see what i can do with that for now...

I am a fairly new dj too and i started with just virtual dj just messing around and when i soon outgrew just the softeware i bought the hercules dj controler which i have now outgrown as well. I seem to be in about the same place you are but instead of vinyl turntables, when i can get the cash together i think i have my mind set on a pair of denon dns3000's. You can use these with time coded cds and use them with virtual dj. Maybe some cd decks would be an option for you as well. I have never used vinyl and the ability to play mp3s with virtual dj and scratch and also just use cds seemed much easier to me.

I have never used vinyl

This is in no way any disrespect to you, but your post reminded me that there are so many people who don't know vinyl. So many people who will never experience the warm, deep bass, and crisp highs. So many people who will live their entire life without stepping into a used record store, never experiencing the smell of a room full of vinyl. People who have grown up on CDs, and like them because they know nothing else, and therefore don't realize how bad digital music sounds. It just makes me sad, that's all...

I've been using Rane/Serato Scratch Live (SSL) for over half a year now. I love the system, it is just like using normal vinyl. I still always bring to gigs with me 2 crates of vinyl (sounds like it defeats the purpose...I know), but that is just in case SSL fails on me. It hasn't failed on me yet. The sound quality is also top notch and the interface is awesome and really easy to use. But then again, nothing is ever quite like the real vinyl.
