Good post Matt Weiss.
Ideally there is very little processing i.e. equalisation, compression, limiting needed at the mastering stage. When the final mix has been done by a professional in an acoustically treated Studio. (My favourite clients!) It is then more about the authoring and arrangement of the project.
In this day and age though where recording equipment is readily available for everyone, I mean recording equipment has become affordable for anyone who wants to make music, beats or whatever it is more and more important to get your project mastered professionally.There are a lot of good reasons for that.
As Matt said the first stage (and the last) quality control. Many of the mixes I receive are to put it quite simple not ready for the final stage (mastering). i.e. a bad mix, individual tracks are already clipping/distorting, the final mix has already been brick walled with compression and limiting etc…. In this case I have to advise my clients to revisit their mix and fix the problems before mastering.
Many Mixes are potentially good but are very unbalanced. There can be many reasons for that like bad speaker setup, badly or untreated room etc…
It is always good to get a professional set of ears in a critical listening environment to fine tune your music before you are releasing.
Also always advise your mastering engineer what medium you are planning to release your music on. As Matt said "the mastering engineer checks to make sure that the audio material fits the guidelines for the medium it will be reproduced on". This is getting more and more critical as there are many different guidelines for digital release platforms.
