First off I will confess that I am not well educated regarding the evolution beat producing. I mainly listen to other stuff. But I am really liking some of the experimentalism and freedom of artists like Hudson Mohowk, Flylo, Dilla and others especially on BrainFeeder crew.
My main problem is I am finding it almost harder to experiment(and sound good) than it is to be conventional. It is almost like I need to know the rules before I can break them. Sure its easy to experiment and have a loose set of style. But I sound like junk.
Do you think all these guys studied Dr. Dre back in the day to get where they are at? Or can an artist rely on there Nature alone to eventually produce music there own unique style.
I have been at this for 2 years now and I am finally settleing on the fact that beat making is the most fun despite listening mainly to other genres. I hope to carve my own niche one day but am looking for pointers where I could start. Its not like can do covers of this style or anything.
Thanks
