You guys are Wrong!!! This is what happens when you don't stay in tune with music other than what you like. Average hip hop had a tempo between 88-98 before the recent trend of "southern beats". The guy who's saying 120 is most likely counting 2 bars as 4, in actuality, your beat is 60bpm.
Majority of the stuff out today has a way slower tempo and faster fill ins(hi hats, synth arps, snare rolls, ect.). From dem' franchise boys to dipset and everything between, average hip hop beat's tempo is between 64 and 86 these days.
Not saying there aren't acceptions, but boom bap old school drums like "straight to the bank"(50 cent)aren't as used in 2007 as stuff like "Make it rain", Lil' Wayne's whole Carter 2 album, "This Is why I'm hot(Mims), and dipset style production.
The reason most people in 2007 can't rap to beats above a tempo of 90 is because they're not trying to sound like Rakim, Busta, Redman, Eminem, DMX or Canibus. They're trying to sound like Rick Ross, Lil' Wayne, TI, Dipset, Mims. As a producer, you gotta change with times if you expect artists to want your beats. That's not selling out, that's keeping current. You can still keep a stash just in case you find an MC that wants those 90 tempo joints, but most won't.
