Tech tip's for MF-PO1 NOISE REDUCTION /STOP THE NOISE PLEASE..

I'M WORKING WITH THE TASCAM MF-PO1,
DON'T LAUGH ,I HAVE CREATED SOME SOLID
TRACK'S I FEEL BUT NO MATTER WHAT
THE NOISE WILL NOT STOP.
I DON'T THINK IT'S MY LITTLE ($30.00)
MICROPHONE ,SOME SAY THE (TDK TYPE 1)
TAPE I'M WORKING WITH BEFOR ANY THING
SAID YES I KNOW THAT (TYPE 2),WORK'S
BEST WITH 4-TRACK RECORDER'S!!!!!!!
ANY TIP'S ,LOST SECRETS, WILL BE TRYED. IN MY SEARCH FOR CLEARNESS ...

i'm working with the tascam mf-1op 4-track,don't laugh mony was short at the time ..but any way my problem is this how do i stop the hiss and build up ?
give me any and all help ...
someone out there .........
 
What frequency is the mic at? Do you have the gain turned up as much as possible when recording?
 
Use Type II tapes. That'll help a little.

Record at the highest possible level you can without distortion. That'll help.

Also, realize that on the cheapest cassette 4-track you can buy, that noise reduction isn't likely going to be a priority of the designers. After all, they cut pretty much all the features they could to get it done at that price point, right?

I'm not slamming your unit; I've had great times and done some really fun stuff on my 4-tracks. Just realize that noise is going to be an issue no matter what.

Assuming that there is absolutely no way to upgrade or reconfigure your setup and that you have followed all the right procedures for recording a hot and clean signal, then all that is left is filtering, gating or using a dedicated noise filter like the Drawmer DF330. The best cost effective approach is to use a low pass filter to remove the unwanted high frequencies that usually go to make up the characteristics of white noise. Other method is to use a gate across the main outs leaving the gate open but set the threshold to move the unwanted hiss.
But TBH honest you need to understand how to keep your signal hot and clean and how to then manage the signal chain.
 
I've been using the dbx 266xl compressor/gate to remove the unwanted ambience, garbage trucks, neighbours screaming kids, etc, and I have been fairly pleased with the results.

It took me a little trial and error, as well as info from the book "Sound Advice on Comressors/Limiter and Gates/Expanders" (www.artistpro.com), before I really started to be happy with the output.

PS. I record to hard disk, and have the vocal input through the gate before it even gets recorded (so the gate/compressors settings need to be carefully thought out and tested, as there is no way to un-compress or un-gate (as far as I know).
