Stereo Question

Can someone please explain stereo vs mono to me. I understand that stereo is to the sides and effectively using "two mics" but I don't understand how one achieves this other than duplicating a channel and panning each hard left and hard right, if that's even a way to do it?

In mono, both speakers equally produce the same sound.

In stereo they alternate.

For effects you can use Pan or different delays to achive this. A ping pong delay automatically does that. You don't need two tracks because for most things you can use Pan. Left/Right. For vocals and using two mics you may want to use 2 tracks. Or you may want to use two different inputs on one track if your DAW supports that. It depends, so experiment.
