The Indie route has been the way to go for the last few years now.

ive had a lot of success on Bandcamp, The features and options are well above any other platform i have found (unless you sell on your own site)

The fact that I-Tunes can set the price of your music is not right.

Plus you only see $7 is you are not paying your producers, engineers, mastering engineers, artwork & design , P.R, etc etc

lol didn't enjoy 50 cent's music for a long time. He went to do movie.

Depends on the deal you all signed with each other. There are a lot of producers who work on flat rate, same with engineers and mastering.
Many independents will do a lot of that themselves or have hook ups that get other work out of a little pro bono work.

Lots of variables, and the $7 figure is the return number not including payouts on the part of the artist(s)..it is the difference between net and gross.

You don't need a label to get spins, you need to find a station to play it and thats where your grind comes in or your street team. The issue where a label comes in is that you have Clear Channel owning most of the stations so if your track doesn't Soundscan it never gets played no matter what, so you have to find independent stations (usually college radio) to blow your ish out. Mainstream radio has too many restrictions to the artist as a whole so radio play doesn't mean good music worth the consumption to anyone but the bean counters who know nothing but numbers.

You are right about a label giving you visibility, but a person who skips the bullshit and reinvests in themselves can also make the same things happen, but it takes a solid dedicated team to do it while the artist focuses mainly on writing, recording and showing up for shows and interviews no matter how big or small they are.

I honestly don't think we could say that an indie could compete on any
level with a major when it concerns things like radio play and visibility (music is another discussion)
but reaching ears ? Gaining fans ? The major has a distinct advantage here.
I do however believe that the internet has played a role in leveling the playing field.
You have a point bringing up college radio but there are guys on majors that get play on "college radio",
dudes like Asher Roth and Macklemore come to mind.

one independent label that's doing well is
Reach Records:Owner Lecrae
they been independent and by what Lecrae says will stay independent he has no desire to "sellout" as some say
and Reach Records has a strong team of talent

Macklemore and Asher Roth aren't majors...
