Also if this problem persists try buying records with plently of solos. Piano, sax players ect. You'll find some dope ****. One thing about jazz, probably more records came out then rock or soul so keep digging, theirs millions of **** out their, try fusion, avant garde.

I had the same problem u had except the opposite. I started sampleing from Jazz and had problems going to soul. The best advice I can give you for jazz is to start off chooping in whole bars then moving on to smaller pieces. ALso what type of jazz are you sampling? Classic 30's jazz is very difficult to sample but gives great results when figured out. Start with fusion and latin jazz easier to find the grooves on there and brings some good resuslts.

i'm definately not trying to sample old, straight jazz. stuff i've been listening to lately has been bob james, grover washington jr, and weather report

one thing i noticed, and i'm not sure if its part of my problem, is that in a lot of jazz the melody starts playing before the downbeat, and when there are drums i don't see how its possible to make the melody loop when its not starting on "one"

more thoughts?

If you sample like this, loop the sample 2 times, copy and paste then trim excess to make a full loop if you can. sometimes you may not be able to.

ive done some weather report, and some blue note jazz artists before when all i had was garageband, and whatever i end up with after i take the clip, i find the bpm of the clip itself...or slow it down to match what i want it to match...i think UNITY by queen latifah, had a horn part, that was just cut from a horn solo. um..leaders of t, no no, lords of the underground...they had that one song, cant think of what it was...had a horn intro..that was just cut from a solo i think as well, and some hot ish came out of that...i dont think there is a secret to making it work.

and jimini, id like to hear the original song of where you ended up with what you got......very nice....

Old jazz, like hot jazz or swing jazz (20s-40s), is hard to sample man. So much goin on and because of the old recording the sound isnt very full. Have to mess with it alot to get it to sound right on a track, and thats after you bang out your melody which can be difficult as well. Just takes some time to flow with it.

You gotta chop the hell out of jazz because the tempo changes up so often. It takes practice but stick to it if you really are feeling jazz.
