Come on son. Lets call a spade a spade. The fact of the matter is you asked for peoples' opinions, you got them, and then you got super defensive about it.
The bottom line is this:
You asked for opinions. You got them. If you didn't agree with them, that's fine, but you didn't have to come back with the "I'M SUPER AWESOME AND YOU GUYS DON'T HAVE A CLUE WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT" attitude. All you had to say was "thanks for the feedback" (you know... the feedback YOU ASKED FOR) and kept it moving.
And honestly, I knew in advance this is exactly what was gonna happen, which is why I put that "no hate..." line at the end of my post. I'm around these forums, and while you have contributed/do contribute a lot of good stuff here, which I appreciate, in my opinion you are a little bit of an e-diva and don't take criticism very well.
I agree I could've said thanks for the feedback... but as I stated earlier, I wanted to show you how incorrect your feedback was by using an example. You might would've liked for me to let it hang out there like - they're right, that's what wrong with it but I felt a little satisfaction in showing you that a lot of people (based off of comments) think you don't know what the phugg you's talkin' bout.
I don't know if I would consider what you wrote as criticism... they sounded more like personal quirks to me. I've been around these forums long enough to know that some people only like to take shots at anything another person does out of fear that someone else may actually like what that person is doing and then their "look at me now" status is diminished. If you post something, expect a rebuttal if somebody disagrees. Don't think you typed something and are going to sit back and say "Um hmm, I tole that nucca..." and want to e-fight about it when your little disagreements get thrown under the bus. Go read that Hip Hop 101 thread again and tell everybody what's wrong with it. This lil newletter is the same thing (a continuation) in portable format.
There's nothing in what I wrote that you can knock... because that's what I experienced. Griffin asked about web forums for info, I say go to web forums rather than review sites because those people get paid or get free ish to do favorable reviews. I say get the full boat of whatever DAW you pick right off the bat because while you may not use everything available... there's a reason why it's in the upgraded version. Like in LIVE 8, you can't do things in a Simpler that you can do in Sampler... but I guess because I left those few words out and didn't explain myself... "Ohhhh, awwlll, what's wrong with the version that only let's you load 2 vsts and limits you to 8 tracks... they can learn on nat... awll hell this is bogus... psst!"
Just wrote up Issue TWO! the next steps in making beats.
Actual music making tips / tricks will be in version three on. Awl Sooky Sooky...
As I read on... they're talking about get DEMO versions... when I said to start out with the trials versions until you get the money for the FULL VERSION... I think I said don't BUY LITE or Crippled versions (keyword BUY - not DON'T USE)... I'm confused,... wait maybe I'm not the one confused...
I see you Griff, that's what you would do. The way I'm doing it is by not sending people anywhere else. Everything is coming from the person that took the journey. There will be videos, audio, links.... it's Issue ONE... the actual BEAT MAKING will come after I think people have what they need to make beats effectively - the hardware / software. The tricks, good vsts I've found, etc... will be in the future... there's no schedule on this either. Just a brain dump of what I've seen, felt, touched.
I did forget to put Twitter on there though, thanks for that.
www.twitter.com/biggrome - for anybody that wants to follow - I always follow back. I heard that you're supposed to tweet twice a day everyday and if you have nothing to say you're supposed to retweet. They said tweeting too much is bad though.
The cluttered track thing, that's a VERY HIGH LEVEL suggestion. I go overboard on my own stuff sometimes if things are clicking. I put that in there based off of current trends. Most music is stripped down... Look at me now / I'm One One / etc.
I really don't want to build a blog about this... I want it to fly around randomly... don't ask why but things travel farther that way. That's why it's a .pdf. Those blog sites become ghost towns. If people get one of these and want to read more.... they'll find the rest or find me and I'll send them the rest. This wasn't some "OH I'M GOING TO DO THIS!" thing... I just didn't feel like making a beat that day.
I'm not going to sell it, I'm attempting to help. Like volunteer work. It might all be horrible advice but it's what I know. Maybe every third issue will be a $1 or something. I never intended on trying to sell it. After I get going maybe I'll reconsider that, depends on how it turns out. If I do like how it comes out, I'll make it into an audiobook and just record myself reading it. We're all lazy now so hearing it is easier than reading it. That's probably going to be the plan. Audio book chapters... hell I can read the first one this weekend... and add everything I thought I left out. DAMN! Griffin is on FIRE. Let me finish that post. Speaking of FIRE... the FIRE 2 Field Recorder app is perfect for me to make a nice ghetto audiobook. Love that app.
Damn, Griff is throwin' bows about his Producers Edge mag versus my random 1am post from years ago. Well damn it you done lit a fire. This thang is going to be more than I expected. I have had the gauntlet thrown down at me, I can't punk out. I'm gonna crank up the intensity in Issue three and Be All I Can Be... let's see how long this flame lasts. I'm going to finish it though. The audio book is going to cost people up the ying yang though so don't think you can skimp out on reading it. Plus if you miss one you got to buy it... after it's a month old or something - I'll figure it all out. Maybe I'll rip out all of the text and make it pretty... who knows (that part doesn't excite me though). I kind of want it to look like - nuthin' special... that's the attraction. The info is supposed to be the draw... not the flowers at the top of the page.
You got one part totally backwards... the ENTIRE purpose of this thing is to keep somebody from buying Logic and 2 MPCs or getting FL and then switching to REASON...
You guys have an entirely different idea than what I was going for. Everything isn't about money. I have money.
As for the cynical old man thing, lol. You'd have to have read a few of those 29,000 posts to know that I'm really okay and actually wouldn't want to be in the music biz as my sole source of income right now. I'll still take placement checks, beat purchases, EBT cards, Food Stamps and anything else anyone wants to funnel my way but I have kids that need medical / dental / protection at home / Fatherly advice / and all o dat... this newsletter is for people that want to start making beats... they can be 35 or 15.
... and a lot of people
couldn'tna been what I've become... you'd have to see the W-2 to know what I'm talkin' bout.
anybody that want's to avoid a few pitfall's, save some money, hear some common sense... keep looking out for
SO YOU WANNA MAKE BEATS ?
