was wondering what would you recommend wit hthe mics above, and in what type of application (live/home)?

So far, it looks like::::

57 - home
58 - live

differences: only the wind screen?

any user input would be greatly appreciated :-)

If you can I would go with the beta, I've perfomed live & in studio with it, HOT! At my church we use Beta58's & SM58's they are dope too. And as far as the SM57 it's just an all around great mic, to me you can't go wrong with Shure.

I totally agree. But I think SM58 and 57's sound different. Use 58's for vocals, and 57's for instruments

aren't both the 57 & 58 dynamic mics? wouldn't a condenser mic be better for vocals?

also, how's these in comparison to the betas?

thanks for all the input so far ! :-)

I never really tried the Betas, but everyone who's mentioned them says they're worth the extra bit.

Condensers are obviously better for vocals, but not onstage.

Totally Agree!

I think the Betas are just more rugged more high quality versions of the originals. Having said that, even people like George Martin use the normal ones, and I've got to say out of my limited experience, that I haven't seen anyone use anything else than an SM57 or 58 for a dynamic in any of the studios I've been to (except for the Bass Drum)

they don't cost THAT much more right? [the betas]

if not, might as well opt for them?

I don't actually know. Why not go to the Shure website and investigate?

Aren't the Betas just a supercardio version of the SM's? Directionally specs and frequency ranges may differ a bit, but the ruggedness is still the same.
The Beta's are used more and more on stage here in my country.

mareek: actually, i'm positive they are priced not to far apart...... but i'll double check

thy: yeah they are supercardioid versions..........

Okay, after 2 minutes on the Shure website, I've found the basic differences. The 57 and 58 are cardioid - uni directional, whereas Beta 57 and 58 are hypercardioid - very unidirectional.
The SM57's and 58's are standard dynamic mikes, whereas the Beta mikes use a neodymium magnet. From what I've read about these, they give the mike a more condenser like frequency response, and as the site says, a higher output - which helps with your s/n if your mixer's good enough. And there's a $100 price difference.

Personally I would go with the SM57 and 58's, not because they're cheaper, but they're the industry standard, and they're also part of that ideal sound in are heads, as they've been used in so many recordings, but obviously it's up to you. If you want better sounding vocals, why don't you invest your money in a condenser?

i mean, if the betas [57/58] have better overall effectiveness in your mix, then i'd opt for those.

hmmm....

i guess i'll look @ a beta 57 & beta 58............?

SM58 always!!!:D

ps cant find space to put avatars......can someone help??
