selling tunes (exposure)

i've been producing for a few years now, i usually give my tracks away or sell them to local artists. i was just wondering how you first got your contacts to record labels.

I was just wondering if you could give me any advice on gaining some contacts within music industry. i would prefer to get to know some music publishers as i'm basically a song writer and just want to sell my tunes and see how they do professionally.
