lol yea, I think 3 hours was the most I spent on making a beat, most of that is mixing and touching up though. If I lay down the drums and bass then the rest come very real quickly. I guess it's the piano lessons I took when I was a kid, melodies are easy for me to come up with.

Damn, I gotta stop putting off taking those lessons.

All the beats on your page all sound as good or better than any of the beats i've heard on famous albums...must be the hardware over software thing and some damn fine mixing.

Hey Sho-down, these people buying your beats, how are they finding you, out of say the other 5000 cats selling beats on the net. Are you advertising or something, or do you think potential buyers are willing to trail through all the"rough" to find a "diamond".

I thought the same exact question. But maybe Sho wants to keep his marketing secrets to himself.

Thanks Sabane.

Well my name is pretty big on mp3.com. I stay in the top 20 on the Hip-Hop charts all the time so my site is easy to find. I don't do any advertising anymore really, when I update my site with new beats I send out an e-mail to everyone on my requested mailing (3,000 people) and that's the only advertising I do.

I guess people like my sound enough to buy it, I have a lot of buyers that come back for more, they are people that really dig my beats so I treat all my clients good so they'll come back. They tell everyone they know about me so those people come to buy beats too. I mean if you got good production and advertise a little then you'll sell beats, plain and simple.

Thanks for the reply Sho-down. You've obviously got a good buisness going there, I'm just surprised no-bodies bought that Spanish beat yet, I was listening to it again to-night and it's killer.

Believe me, I've had offers lol, every day someone wants it but I'm not selling that beat or "All My Love" over the net. My manager is shopping those two along with my other off-line material to labels for a higher price.

I sold two more beats today so I'm about to have to update again.

In the wise words of mcenroe " I wouldn't lay it on the line for a rap career so I got me an edumacation, now I work the nine to five as an engineer and tour during 2 weeks paid vacation " I really didn't come here to hate on anyone but I'm calling it man, do it for the love of the music not the $$blingbling$$$

I believe noone really starts making music for the money, it always starts with the love, the money is a bonus. If you look at it like this though, millions of people work a 9-5 job that they hate with a passion, why do they do it? For the money of course, so why is music any different? Some people are good at it, they enjoy it, and want to make a living with it, nothing wrong with that at all.

Everyone wants to succeed in doing something they love, that's a dream hardly any people get to fulfill, so I don't think people should critisize others if they enjoy the money side of music.

Thats a fair opinion , I would say make music for the love of music no matter what, I hate to see record labels taking hold of artists and conforming them into the makers of music that is tuned for a mainstream audience instead of themselves, if you don't agree with the lyrics and beliefs that are put into your beats don't sell out for bills, dignity is more precious then cash

I think there was a post somewhere in the hiphop boards about why you make beats...%fame % money etc...may find that one interesting Dirty Herb....I think most do it for both...Like sho said working 9-5 jobs and hating it, I fit in that category...but I only work 3 days, enough for the bare minimum to live, but I have this love for music, so things are never as bad as it seems and am working towards it as a fulltime job, but have a ways to go.

Does anyone know if theres a place where you can auction beats? If there isn't there really should be.

is there any room in this world for someone who just wants to be a mix engineer and makes music on the side?

Mr. Sho (catchy?) lol..

I got about $7,000 worth of equipment.

I started with fruity loops back when it just came out, I've actually been making beats for a little over 3 years but I wasn't even close to being serious with it until a year and a half ago. I messed around with Fruity just making beats for myself and friends, **** was so wack lol. Then I bought a Triton with some drug money, it took me about 6 months to get comfortable with the Triton. I learn something new everyday now and I still got a lot to learn.

whats up man, i checked out some of your beats and i think thats cool how you used mp3.com to put your stuff out there.. you made use of a free resource like that with the ability to market you by itself.. thats kinda tight.. what i wanna know tho is how much you gotta pay your manager and what the manager does for you and also how much you gotta pay for the lawyer? i dont know any lawyers personally but i know you need one if you wanna actually start selling product

My manager takes 20% of all beats he sells. The average rate is 15%-30%. The manager has the sit downs with the labels, he plays the beats for them, sets up all the contracts, does all the legal work basically, him and the lawyer. All you do is make the music, sign the contract, and cash the checks.

Lawyer prices are all different, I got a contract a while back from a label and it cost $500 for a lawyer to review it and make changes to fit what he thinks would be best for me, I didn't pay though...my manager did.

You need a manager and lawyer if you want to start selling off-line to indie and major labels, it's very important that you do. I live in Alabama, I couldn't find any entertainment lawyers here so I have to use my manager's up in NY.

I feel you 100%. I have no social life right now, I sacrificed everything for my music, I don't go out anymore to clubs or parties, I quit drugs, quit drinking, all for music. I want a clear mind and I want to put all of my time into music, the hell with the parties and clubs, that **** will come later on in life.
