hi!
can somebody help me. i need some advice...
at the beginning i wanted to buy a mpc500....but after all readings, i decided
to buy for the same or less money a roland sampler.....
but now i am standing in front of a difficult choice,
and that is: do i buy the sp 555 or the 606....
one feature i like about the 606 is that you have a
little screen, with that you can chop your recorded samples
easy? is the 606 still up to date...
would be nice to hear from you

It depends on what you'r elooking to do. If you are using the sampler for recording, then I would go with the SP-606. The graphic desplay makes chopping beats a bit easier and it can also operate as a digital interface if you're working on a computer. It's a great sampler to learn on. The SP-555 seems more for live performances and DJs.

hi thanks for the reply...
i am not shure at all....but i defenetly want to make beats...
the style like: hip hop, dope beats, downbeats...and drum and bass...
and just playing around.....recently i was working with reason, wich was
fine, but i think for myself working with a sampler is more close
to the music....my bigges concern ist chopping the samples....
i have seen a movie about the 606 where a auto-chopping is mentioned...
whereas the 555 has this function not....

The 606 is probably the better machine. But it depends on you. The 606 has the screen, autochop, and 2 FX engines plus a master FX section. The 555 has the loop capture(a built in audio looper) 12 notes of polyphony over the 606s 8. the 555 can take 2 gig CF cards where the 606 can take up ti 512mb. Also...not such a big deal but the FX and timestretch on the 555 are slightly improved... this isint a big deal tho. To me, it basically comes down to this. Are you a visual person or do you prefer to do things by feel ? Both machine will chop just as good but the 606 does it visually thru the wav editor and the 555 does it by feel with the mark button. Try em both out if u can ! thats the best way to decide.

I love my 606 to death and would never sell it. It's always up-to-date as it gets more powerful as your computer improves. Roland keep updating the drivers too, so if you have a brand-new Vista PC it's still compatible.

Having said all that, I must say how much I want a 555 too! There are more than enough differences between these two boxes to warrant having both... that live looping is insane..

hi there :-)
what about the memory card, is 512mb really sufficient for sampling?
and? i read yesterday in the manual of the 555 that you can only
record 15 sec....is it possible to feed the sampler with samples
from the card that are longer than this time?

additionally the onyl thing that i like about the 606 is the autochopping function....in comparison to the 555 is this really a needful thing?

I hate autochopping Some people love it. But no, not needed just cool to have. The 555 can record over 24hours of audio on the lowest settings :) The 15 seconds is only for the loop capture... which is like a second sampler in your sampler used for making audio loops from any incoming source over your beats....like playing live bass while your beat runs or something like that.

512mb is plenty - about 3 hours total (not 24hrs though - the 555 beats every sampler in this regard..) Go with the 555, you know you want it ;).

Remember, the SPs use CF as RAM, so there's no loading time for your samples (like on some other machines). One thing that is a little strange to me is the lack of banks on the 555; with a 2 gig card they should have had 48 or even more banks... but tis only a little thing.

hehe...i am not sure at all with the 555, cause, this choppin function
from the 606 i like a lot...and this wave display also....but on the other side the 555 would also work nice for dj-action like mixtape or live....
...damn life is full of choices....but definetly i know that i dont want
a mpc....heheh
