Roland SH-201 vs. JP-8000

They have the SH-201 at your local music shop, so I wanted to see if anyone that owns or has used a JP8K extensively has gotten to try the roland SH-201. I got to use it a little, and the supersaw and feedback osc sounded good to me, but I was wondering if anyone could make a more informed comparison as I've been contemplating buying a JP-8000/8080 for quite a while, and if the SH could make an acceptable substitute, I don't know if I'd be able to keep myself from buying it.

I vote JP8080. More patch storage, doesn't look as gay, and costs less than a 201.

I have owned a JP8000 for 8 years and I recently played an SH201 for a while. I didn't like the interface as much and I didn't get anything out of it like I would from my JP.
 
Well thanks to the USB, I don't think patch storage will be an issue, and with the chorus and built in sequencer I'd be able to get over the interface and looking gay part. I'd just like something that could give me a good feedback osc and a supersaw like I can get out of Superwave P8.
 
Aye, I'm an JP-8000 AND an SH-101 owner. I'm waiting for the SH-201 to hit up a local store. From the reviews and the odd videos i've seen of it, it sounds very promising. I've actually pondered on getting it but then think how similar (supersaw etc) it is to my current JP-8000 (which rocks btw!).

At first I thought it looked "gay", but now since its been marketed and all those sought after reviews, it's giving me mad GAS (fart!)

But looks definitely aren't everything (hell the JP8000 looks like a toy to some)...once it hits the store nearby, i'm all over it. If i like it, welp i'll post new pics :)

they have them at my local sam ash, I'd imagine any other big store should have one.
 
hey where can i find a good emulation of that jp 8000 i would like to own one but they are too expensive and i saw they had a patch on the new junos... please holla back and let me know .. any software carry the sound...

It's really no substitute for the jp-80x0.

Also: yes, the jp has a bit of "gay" quality to it. But at least it doesn't have a D-beam. Nor does it say GROOVE (not that the 201 does)

In conclusion... **** Roland anyway. Re-issue the 303, ****ers !!!!!!!

Everybody thought the sh101 and the tb303 looked and sounded like toys when they were released.......Oh how wrong they were!

I have been playing with an sh201 at the local music shop and I must say I'm getting it! It absolutely rocks. The look has been changed a bit since the press releases - the one at my local shop has a grey and silver facade instead of the garish white that appeared in all the press releases.

The greatest peices of equipment ever looked like toys and they went on to redefine entire genres.....so I would wait and see before becoming a boffinated hater of all things 'toyish'.

And D-Beams are great if you are a live musician - they can do things that can not be achieved in any other way and make for much more entertaining playing than some nerd with abelton on a laptop.
 
i just heard a nice lead from the jp 8000 i dont know how to program so i dont think that would be a good keyboard for me. but i understand with the new xr rack that there are jp 8000 sounds on it.... im into synths like the a6 and the jp 8000 but would i really need to get a jp to enjoy it's sound.....
 
The JP-8080 is still - after all these years already - my favourite VA synth. And it's also the only one I kept (I owned also a Novation BassStation, Novation Supernova II, shortly a Virus B, and I know the Nordleads very well as a friend of mine has the NordRack 2 ánd 3) - I sold them all except my beloved JP-8080... So I'd say: get a JP-80x0 !!
(also: the Roland JP-80x0 is already a classic - while the SH-201 will never get that status, believe me very well)

how do u feel about the 8000 on the fantom x series .. do they come close are they any good..

I think if you already own the JP-80x0 or V-synth, the SH-201 might be overkill. I can see maybe the SH-201 replacing the JP-8000 but not the V-synth.

he says in the vid "basically you got the analog modeling engine of the v-synth and JP-8000 inside the SH-201 retail for $699"

What do you guys think of that?
 
I haven't had a chance to use the sh-201 yet myself but it does look amazing!
But after all the time I have spent with my JP-8000 I don't think I could ever give it up - I love that synth :)

for the guy looking for the software jp8000 there are 3 VSTi versions

I'm just afraid some of you guys might not be giving the SH a fair chance, simply because it's not a JP. I don't know a whole lot about the electronics behind a VA, but it seems like it's all software, so it would be easy to replicate exactly.

I can appriciate good sound, I have an original Juno 106 and an SC Pro-One, I'd just like to get the JP sound in the easiest to use package, and with USB and VST control, that would make the SH worth it, assuming the sound replication is accurate. I've bought and regretted buying a VST clone of the Prophet, I just don't want to make that same mistake.
