Roland Boss SP-303 vs. Korg Electribe S

I haven't tried the Korg, but I own the SP-303 and it's pretty sweet for what it is. From what I've heard the ES-1 would probably work better as your only production tool, cause it's designed more with composing in mind. The SP-303's sequencer is pretty limited unless you have other midi gear you can dump sequences from, or just trigger the samples from your groovebox or computer or whatever. The effects are a lot better on the SP-303, and the max sampling rate is higher. Also, the Korg is more expensive, but it looks to be more like something you could use by itself for a while to get going (although you wouldn't be able to make very detailed music with it alone) so I guess that's how they try to justify the price.

So it really comes down to what you want to get out of the box, and if you have other gear you're trying to integrate. Effects are very important for a sampler (unless you've got scads of stomp-boxes or some sweet rack effects units) and frankly Korg's effects blow compared to the Roland. Anyways, just my two cents.

Thats one of the main things I'm looking for is quick sampling ability and effects. I want to add Hawtin-esque reverse effects to my mixes. As well as be able to drop a sound in here and there. Is there anyway to kinda sync the roland up with my tables (manually obvoiusly) so it automatically plays a sample every 8/16 beats? Would probably be easy with the ES...just wondering if thats possible with the 303.

i gots a question. does the sp-303 or the 202 have midi clock sync?

and i've seen the 202 for $199USD, so it looks apealing, but is the 303 worth the extra dough?

From what I've seen, the 303 has some more effects and knobs. Plus it can use smartmedia cards. I think the local Guitar Center sells it for $250 but I'm not sure.

Yeah the 303 has midi clock sync. It has 3 modes, first one is normal "slave" mode so if you hit start on your sequencer, it starts playing in time. The other it just reads the tempo and you gotta start the sequence in time yourself, but can be handy for mixing off of a song on your other gear. ANd finally, you can turn off midi sync altogether and just send messages to it on any midi channel to trigger the samples.

As far as syncing to tables, I assume you mean the korg's tap tempo button. The SP-303 also has one, but let me assure you that it is no pitch slider! You will spend many a frustrated hour trying to tap tempos in and get things beatmatched. You're almost better off tapping to set the rough bpm, and using the tempo knob to make fine adjustments.

cool, i've been thinking about getting one to go along with my roland dj1000, since i would be able to sync up the midi clocks (fuq the tapping)

hey verbal, did you see the 303 for $250 or sm cards?

The 303. I think GC is selling it for $250 but I'm not sure. Damn..I was at GC today and was playing with it too. Forgot to check the price..
