Recording Schools Audio Engineering Programs

whats the word on Musicians Institute: Hollywood...
i took a tour there and was pretty impressed. ive also looked at SAE-LA and the only differences i saw was that SAE is a 9 month program and MI is only 6 months. MI is also about $4000 cheaper than SAE.
 
I seriously hope that whatever school some of you cats choose... that you're thinking about how you want to apply your education and how you can adjust to changes... once you get settled into the market(if you make it).
There are many applications of studio engineering that may not "meet" with your original gameplan. Certain job markets(regions that you live) or personal preferences... may not be available or may be oversaturated. You really do have to weigh in the prospect of maybe moving, being on the road, or be willing to be "directed"... instead of 'doing your own thing'.
What's not being presented from any of these schools... is the real life numbers of people... who after attending these schools... may have to go back to their parents crib or take up secondary(non-related) jobs... until an opportunity comes around.
Let's be real... anything that involves music is more of a passion at first and has many cats flocking to the various applications. For some it remains a passion... then, for some... it's a paycheck.
Getting past the initial thrill and getting settled to a normal routine, that best suits you, can take awhile(that goes for any profession). You really want to get that into your head... or else not getting an instant return of your education... will eat you up.
It's like wanting to be the lead guitarist for a band... and you have mad talent... but, your appearance may not be marketable. Do you quit playing the guitar, because you can't get that lead spot... that limelight exposure or do you accept the role of a studio musician?
Studio engineering(any profession) can have that kind of scenerio. As an engineer... could you handle being rejected by the studio of your interest... but, get an offer from a not-so noticable employer?
I don't care what aspect of the music industry that someone is trying to make a name in... I don't care how successful you may be... there is one common varible... 'harsh reality is on the plate, with a slice of humble pie... with a tall cold glass of pride.'

stay grounded...stay flexible... stay focused... and stay connected.

I'm finished with Full Sail as of this past Friday !!! I'm ready to go back to New York.

I'm actually considering doing something in the Post Production field. In the Recording Arts program the last course is Audio Post Production, and I found it interesting. We got to do foley, ADR, field recording, and some sound designing. It was a lot funner than I expected it to be.
 
It's not the school, it's the Network, and work ethic. When you hear some horrible song on the radio and think how the hell did this guy get a deal, It's because of the people they know and how hard they worked to get that ****ty song out there. Do you think the guy that got a degree from Berklee has to work any less the the guy from SAE or Fullsail? dought it. And if you talk to any sucsesful person in any creative field they will tell you they work all day every day. I'm going to fullsail and when i leave, I know I will have to work 90 hrs a week, not to pay my loans back, but to get where I want to be. Just weigh things out, seams like you know where your going.

Do you get any internships through this school, hows their Audio Engineering program? do you need to have any previous experience?
 
OK OK OK OK everyone's saying different $#!% so...I've narrowed it down to SAE ATL and LA SRA. I'm still kinda having feelings for Full Sail cuz it was my first love lol but I dont know if it would be worth me doing a lil extra...financially. Its kinda long too compared to the others. and the studio hours arent really rubbing me the right way. I guess afterall it isnt about the school. But I just want A GOOD EDUCATION. I wanna be a GREAT ENGINEER...cuz i kno i can become a great producer on my own...i mean thats not the purpose of the school...teaching you to become a producer right? I just want a thorough education and a good placement afterward. Internships....HELP!? a lil more elaboration. I'm almost there. lol thanks

i think im sold i just did my last lil look overs b/t sae and la and the lap top and location got me...its a lil longer than LA too so...more thorough? BUt I didnt see any music business stuff.... I liked full saild i think cuz they went into the songwriting aspect and ear training tho... :*-( But its just too damn much!

The Conservatory, like Full Sail, provieds you with a Mac laptop w/ Pro Tools, Logic, Waves,etc. The thing about the Conservatory is that you can intern almost anywhere ni the U.S. while you're there. They are also good with placements. 'sides, when you leave you're Pro Tools certified. And more importantly, you're Autotune certified, which makes you valuable in today's industry. You can also recieve certification in other programs such as Reason.

yeah I thought about that. I really liked the conserv. but i think it was the location. is that the one in arizona or minnesota. I was thinking about just going to SAE and then getting Pro Tools Cert there and maybe even reason or whatever else I can afford. I liked that idea tho. but I might just wanna be in atlanta tho...just for fun. Auto tune...hmmmm???
 
SAE is a great school I'am attending right now in nashville. they give you everything you need from your computer to any recording programs. Sae is all hands on work which is really nice you get a alot of work on the boards and stuff. It is pretty expensive but is worth the money. There are great teachers there and classes are great they teach the classes as if you dont knw anything about it. Overall it is worth it.
 
hey FP Ive read through this entire thread because Im in the middle of a little delima.

Im currently a student at CU Denver for recording arts but in all honesty the program is kind of a joke. my recording class is only twice a week for an hour and a half and we only get 4 hours a week in the studio...A WEEK!!! My teacher is too worried about recording his own stuff he doesnt structure teaching at all. I learn more from people at my store (i work at guitar center) than I do at school.

So ive started the research process again and Im think about either the Art Institute or SAE. What are the costs for programs like this? and to make things even more difficult I was thinking about doing SAE in europe because I want to start Djing as well and IMHO theres no better place to become a DJ than in europe.

It sounds like SAE has a good track record for success and there are job placements too which is def a plus.

besides the berklee or NYUs is SAE the way to go?

I'd look at the recording workshop too. 3 or 4 months and your done. Then go to europe with the money you saved.
 
I graduated from IPR and I thought it was the best school out of any of them. I'd say IPR has the best teachers out of any of the other schools too.

As for the location, Downtown Minneapolis isn't as bad you people make it out to be. Maybe i'm getting denfensive about my hometown, but it's not a boring midwest town like people from the coasts make it to be. There's no farms or miles and miles of cornfields around the Minneapolis area. As for the rest of the state, that's all it is....

Besides, are any of the other schools located across the street from a strip club & a store called SexWorld?? Didn't think so.

Anyway, shoot me a message if anyone is interested about IPR.

Way too much.

They say 80% of the stuff you get teached at SAE is just basic knowledge. You could learn most of the stuff on your own.

You will mostly learn theory.


Ppl don't realize that an internship is worth WAY more than all this SAE theory bs.

Especially cuz SAE is charging you too much...way too much.
