Autogain is easily turned off and on. VU meters take up panel space, so the tradeoff is a more crowded panel. From what I hear, one of the features that Grandmaster Flash wanted the most was autogain.

Just received my Empath...one word...amazing. Superior sound quality, excellent EQs, extremely versatile for all genres. The best purchase I've made in a long time. It's worth every penny you pay for it.

err.... just noticed that you can turn the autogain on and off....

never mind what i said....

mine is coming on feb. 28th :)

anyone tried the JBL EON G2 10 inch powered speakers?

i am probably trading my like new smx-501 for one of those speakers.

got the rane empath. only been able to mess around with it for a little bit but it feels solid!

now i know what y'all mean by a mixer having headroom. in order to max out the main output i pretty much need everything to be all the way up for most records.

the faders are butter, the layout is great, knobs are nice and long and easy to grip. the sound is top notch. it does feel like a tank, which is how people describe ranes.

the cue/metering system takes a bit getting used to if you want to be able to see the cue level and master mix level to compare how to bring in your record.

everything works as said- there really is only one small gripe- the EQ only goes to plus 6db instead of a more robust 12db but it does have full kill ability. for techno and tweaking out stuff with the EQ more than plus 6 is needed IIMHO.

but this is the mixer i now feel comfortable holding onto for a long time :)

black and gold... makes me lose my control!!!

Congratulation to those that just got their Empaths!!! Hey, did you guys see the autographed Grandmaster Flash version?? I guess technically it's the same as the blue Empath. But the "Signature" Empath has brushed gold/black surface with a custom carrying case!!!

Let me find a mop... gotta clean up my drool spot!!

i saw that one. myself i dont like gold for jewelry, furniture or anything for that matter- except white gold- i like the looks of the silver and blue one better :)

oh and finally having a mixer with split cue- good stuff!

thanks for the reviews guys. i've been doing research for my 2nd mixer. My current technics 1200shx 4ch has EQs that crackle and uneven stereo levels on 2 of the 4 channels. yuck

anyhow everyone says rane's rock and the sound quality can't be beat.

the only strange thing is the pan knob is above the EQs vs below. that knob hardly gets used. why put it in the middle???

i look forward to purchasing the new empath mixer!

I actually like the location of the pan knob. It's directly below the gain controls, so you know the two top knobs are no touchy unless you wanna pan or adjust the gain. As for the "Flex-Fx" i really think it's the best out on the market. It allows you to either have a full dry or full wet or somewhere in between. BTW, Even w/ a cheap effects processor, like a Alesis Ineko (i own/use one), the sound quality is absolutely breathtaking.
