I'm getting 96 3" 1x1 foot wedge foam panels for my studio mixing room. I'd like 4" Pyramid for the booth, since I saw a picture of a booth done in pyramid and it looked great. I read that pyramid isn't as good as wedge though. Anyone have experience with this?

Not sure where you heard that statement, but a blanket statement like that isn't true.

The results are going to be based on what problems are in the room. To find that our you have to take the room dimensions into account and determine what frequencies will be the problems. Then and only then should you start placing foam. If you don't have the equipment to check the results then it can be done by trial and error and the good ole ears.

How big is the room you are using 96 sq ft of foam on? That's a lot of foam. It might be better to reduce that amount and spend the money on some bass traps too.

If you go to Auralex and fill out a form they will tell you what you need for free.

But don't buy Auralex. Go to foambymail.com and get the same thing, but much cheaper.

When comparing open cell foams it is not who makes it that matters. It is the density per cubic foot that determines its dampening qualities.

While you are at the Auralex site read Acoustics 101 it is a great read for doing this sort of thing.

Yes the NRC is important to know, if you want to do some calculations yourself. Thicker will always have higher NRC, which usually translates to needed less sq ft to fix a problem.

Every situation is different so the amounts required will vary.

The wedge and pyramid shapes add some diffusion to the room.

ya, lots of good info on the auralex site. but basically, wedge is better for absorption because it is thicker, on average, than pyramids. think of pyramids as being wedge that has been cut in both directions, and right away you will realize that there is less material there for the same depth. but pyramids have better diffussion, due to more surfaces facing different directions.

...OK - That's what I figured. In a booth you would need more diffusion though wouldn't you. Absorption is needed but it's so small in there diffusion is more necessary... Or do I understand this wrong.

I went to the Auralex site and did the room experimentation. For the project studio room, they gave me...

36 2x2x2 Wedge Panels
12 Bass Traps (wow)
8 T-Fusor Sound Diffusors

For the Booth it gave me...

32 DST-112s
32 DST-114s
4 DST-Bass Traps

2" wedge... That doesn't seem deep enough. And 12 Bass Traps sounds insane.

And there's no way I'm putting four bass traps in my closet. I'm starting to think the Auralex site is a little exaggerated to get more sales...

Probably not a lot of need for bass traps in a vocal booth.

Use your best judgement. Start off with a little in your mix room and the booth, then work your way up if needed.
