Producer of the Week 3/28/07 (J-Dilla) R.I.P

Dilla wasn't about to let the real Hip Hop go. Eventhough he worked with artist from a lot of different areas.... he kept the core Hip Hop in all of those songs that were posted.

The core will always win respect... fly by night / in the moment Hip Hop has no longevity.

Some Other Dilla Produced Joints not mentioned much, or at least not on this thread.

Slum Village -Fantastic Voyage 2
-I dont know
-Get this Money
-2u4u
-CB4

Q-Tip - Vibrant Thing
-Lets Ride
-Things We Do

Royce the 5'9" - Lets Grow
Jay Dee - F tha Police
BlackStarr - Little Brother
De La Soul - Much More (one of my fav dilla beats ever)

Slum Village Fantastic Voyage 1
-Look of love(remix)
-Hoc n Puck

Busta Rhymes - Turn me up!

Man thats all i can think of right off top of the head.

Yup.

That sums up the man 100%

Incredible Jay Dee productions almost never mentioned:

Poe – Fingertips
9 Yards – Always (Jay Dee remix)
Bahamadia – One-4-teen (funky for you) (original and remix)
Jay Dee – **** the police
Spacek – Eve (Jay Dee mix)
Steve spacek – dollar
Dwight trible – antiquity
m.e.d. – push
oh no – move
amp fiddler – waltz of a ghetto fly
jaylib – raw **** ft. talib kweli
Busta Rhymes – woo haa (jay dee rmx)
1st down – a day wit the homies (album) [jay dee’s first “group” with phat kat on lyrics and him on beats…this is an album that a lot of people don’t know about. **** was crazy when it dropped in ’95)
Craig Mack – Get Down – (Jay Dee rmx)
Platinum Pied Pipers – Shotgun intro

…All I can think of off the dome at the moment…

People also don’t realize the extent of his involvement with janet jackson’s velvet rope album. Everyone thinks he only did a remix for “got till it’s gone.” He did the original as well -- plus collabed on every other song on that album. To date, (and from when it first dropped) I think this is janet’s best work and I didn’t even know of Dilla’s involvement on the whole album until a while after it came out.

-LBJ- says,

Nice critique of J-Dilla. I think you really highlighted his ART / TALENT as well as the approach he used to capture his emotions, very well.

I liken this to a movie critic that breaks down the scenes and actors. In this case J-Dilla delivered time and time again.

I also appreciate how you were able to identify the small and simple but yet effective things J-Dilla did to make his production so ALIVE in the GROOVE! I look forward to more of your Threads!

One1 -LBJ- !

Sevin u posted some heat!! I gotta check that out. And good info on the Janet album. Alot of people who dont know him, or just heard of him i make aware of his production of "Got til Its Gone" and they are like really?? haha.

One thing that stood out to me at first, was his crazy chopping of basslines, and how he played them.... out of key? Or thin sounding on some parts. Its almost like his basslines had "swing" to them.

YA'LL MUST HAVE NEVER HEARD OF POLOW DA DON, STARGATE, TIMBALAND, DANJA, KING LOGAN, or some others if JDILLA is producer of the week....

JAY WES, bringing R&B music back

jd tracks are eternal...and as far as the light being ur favourite common track,i gota say mine is i used to love her....hands down....

How could you even compare polow the don to the legendary Jay dee?

all of these producers are certainly good but, with the exception of timbaland, none of them yet qualify as having changed the game.

jd tracks are eternal...and as far as the light being ur favourite common track,i gota say mine is i used to love her....hands down....

that's mos definitely a classic common trak but dilla didn't do it...
NoI.D. did.

No Doubt Pworld :) The man was sick with it. As I see it, that's where he got his legendary status amongst other producers -- not so much with the stuff that most people know about - but with the more obscure, earlier stuff. I mean, to my knowledge, Poe's "Fingeretips" joint was the very fisrt thing Dilla ever did that was available to the public... in fact, I might have read Amp Fidler say it was the first time he'd ever done something in a serious studio environment. I had originally gotten Poe's album for the single which Dilla had nothing to do with. But once I heard the album and, in particular, that one song, it stole the shine from the whole rest of the album. And I always read album credits like I'm cramming for finals to see who did what - especially when I like a song. I followed him from there. Just the way that joint was hooked, the way he flipped that sample -- the whole spirit of it, etc. I knew the cat had somethin.'

Great thread but I wont be satisfied until Dr. Dre, Alchemist, Mannie Fresh, or Timbo get what they deserve.

I was on the Stones Throw street team when he died. They sent us all an email that let us know what happend and where to send flowers and whatnot. so sad :-(. Im really glad i knew about him and his work while he was still alive. His music will live forever.

i know jd didnt make i used to love her....the thread starter said common-the light was his favourite common track and i just had to drop my fav common track thats all.......

I thought "The Official" was a Dilla production when I first heard it also, but for the record, it was actually done by Madlib. On the Jaylib album, you can also tell who produced what track from the rapper - Dilla only raps on Lib's beats, and vice versa.

That's that ****. The whole album is good, I like the track at the end with Korn most probably.

you obviously have a limited taste based on the list of producers you posted. he's choosing classic producers first.
