I was just researching preamps and came across the Presonus ADL 600. Everybody who reviewed this preamp said nothing but stellar things about it. Any body here familiar with it? Massive.....Krushing?

I have to say I'm kinda flattered having been put in the same category with mr. Massive, but no, haven't used it...Presonus has nice stuff, but it's almost always sort of in-between - good but there's often something better in the price range.

In fact the only Presonus thingy I've owned was the Blue Max (which I got for really really cheap), only to have it fry itself after a week of use...

There's one of the reasons I've never given the ADL a "real" chance... It's really the *only* piece of "high end" gear they have. That bugs me...

Not that they don't have some relatively well-designed stuff... The Central Station for example -- Although I would've liked it even more if they would have put some Grayhill parts under the hood - even if it doubled the price. The ACP8 (88?) is a great piece for live sound.

But the other stuff... All those ridiculously bad sounding blue boxes, the Eureka (which some people really like for some incredibly unknown reason that I guess I'll never understand), a compressor with *presets* on it (?!?)...

Before I get "flamed" -- Sure, for $100, those $100 pieces are fine for messing around with. But when a company that puts the word "Professional" on really bad-sounding $100 pieces puts out a $2300 preamp, I feel the need to hem and haw about it.

That all said -- Avalon is fairly "proven" -- I wouldn't want one as a keystone piece (as I would with a Flamingo or something of that ilk), but they're solid pieces (tubes aside). API, Great River, Grace, True Systems, LaChappel, Crane Song (of course)... There are amazing pieces out there from companies who put out amazing pieces day in and day out. That's where I'd want to throw the cash (unless I already had a bunch of great preamps and was just looking for something different).

Appreciate the feedback. So Massive, you're saying the Crane Song Flamingo would be a great choice for an all around preamp. I don't want to start cheap. I want quality from tracking to mastering. I'm recording mostly beats aka all genres. If the Crane Song isn't ideal, then which one would be the go to preamp for you, " no money issue and why"?

If "there could be only one" it would probably be the Flamingo. Incredibly flexible -- And considering Dave's "minimalist" circuit designs, having that sort of power in something that transparent is pretty amazing. The man is a mad genius.

Alrighty, appreciate the info Massive. Check this out for tracking:

-Cranesong Flamingo
-LA-610
-Vintech X73
-Empiracal Labs Distressor(2ch)
-RME FireFace 800

Would this setup do me justice for tracking?

If that's what works for you. I probably wouldn't be using the Distressor during tracking very often...
