pics of my setup

Here are some pics of our setup. Used to focus only on spinning, but just recently - about a month ago - started getting some gear to produce. Not much yet, but will have some new stuff in the next month or so...

Have 2 Technics
An Numark mixer
Two Peavey T-300 loudspeakers
A QSC amp (and an old hand me down EQ)
Kaysound controller (ugh!)
Vaio with Reason, SoundForge, ReCycle
Two Aiwa speakers and a Fostex sub for "monitors"
An external Soundblaster and external hard drive
Most of the vinyl is just out of the picture on the right wall

In the next month or so I'm going to spend some of my bonus on new gear... probably some M-Audio BX8a's, an actual desk, a new EQ, a really nice keyboard, an MPC, a Technics CD players, and ProTools (and if there's any money left a new bed, but I have my priorities straight!). I'll post some new pics then.

We'll probably paint the room and set it up right with some Auralex and acoustic design once I get everything in place -- not my biggest priority right now (and I'm not sure how the ceiling will work for that).

Dam man. Your room is so clean, and you have so much space. I like the little set up. OH and maybe you should try out some different monitors than the bx8's i havent heard too many good things about them, but then again, ive never actually heard them myself, so i cant really say anything.

Thanks. And thanks for the heads up on the monitors. Anything you recommend in the same price range? I'll do a search to see what other people are saying....

I wanna tell the whole world about a friend of mine
This little light of mine and I'm finna let it shine
I'm finna take yall back to them better times
I'm finna talk about my mama if yall don't mind
I was three years old, when you and I moved to the Chi
Late December, harsh winter gave me a cold
You fixed me up something that was good for my soul
Famous homemade chicken soup, can I have another bowl?
You work late nights just to keep on the lights
Mommy got me training wheels so I could keep on my bike
And you would give anything in this world
Michael Jackson leather and a glove, but didn't give me a curl
And you never put no man over me
And I love you for that mommy cant you see?
Seven years old, caught you with tears in your eyes
Cuz a nigga cheatin, telling you lies, then I started to cry
As we knelt on the kitchen floor
I said mommy Imma love you till you don't hurt no more
And when I'm older, you aint gotta work no more
And Imma get you that mansion that we couldn't afford
See you're, unbreakable, unmistakable
Highly capable, lady that's makin loot
A livin legend too, just look at what heaven do
Send us an angel, and I thank you (Hey Mama)

If anyone has any tips on acoustics, by the way, please let me know. The room is huge (23' by 12') and oddly shaped. It works well and rearranging this way makes the loudspeakers sound a lot better than before (I just rearranged today after looking at all the set ups). So, if anyone has any ideas for acoustics (I know I'll need traps) please feel free to give some feedback.

Shoot down the long way and cloud the ceiling.

Thanks. To do that, I could set the desk up facing the tables so the monitors come down the long way... would that work? Any other alternatives? I mean, the monitors just need to face the room length-wise rather than horizontally (like it is set up now), right? Cloud with Auralex? (Hope that's not a dumb question.) Appreciate the help!

Auralex is overpriced for so little that it does. If you have the time and the ability, DIY panels work better and are a quarter of the price. There are a number of tutorials out there.

The short story - Yes, spin to your right. The size of the room is fairly decent - You want your ears to be exactly 8'-9" from that front wall. If you can stand your speakers 2.5' from the wall (should be acceptable) that's going to give you basically a 6' equilateral triangle. Have the speakers angled to meet at around 11.5' from the front wall (just a couple feet beyond the mix position.

That's the setup -

Now the room - You have crest which is going to be your best friend or your worst enemy. That's a lot of space for low end to congregate. But it's also a lot of space for low end to be absorbed. However, you're going to need something up there to absorb it. Auralex isn't going to cut it. It's great for HF flutter and comb filtering, but worthless for low end (where all your problems - where almost *everyone's* problems are anyway).

"Cloud" as in "suspend" - Suspended bass traps and plenty of them. Some GIK/RealTrap type units are a given in the corners - You could run along the entire crest with them on the ceiling and it wouldn't be enough unless you went two-wide on them. But a mix of traditional traps and MDF panels (cut triangularly, covered with rigid fiberglass and wrapped in cloth) suspended every several feet would completely turn that room around... As long as you could get the base of the triangle around 4' or so... Longer = lower frequencies. Triangular = broadband also. Good thing.

There are actually quite a few options I can think of that might really whip it into shape... GIK's in 2 side-by-side, then 1, then 2, then 1, then 2... That's only 8 panels for the ceiling and it'd probably really work well...

Thanks MASSIVE!! I'm going to reorganize when I get my monitors. I'm going to start with GIK's in the corner, and suspend some 2"x24"x48" GIK's along the crest. If I'm reading you correct, that won't be enough and I'll need triangles with a base of 48" to suspend -- not sure where I'll get those... saw a site that does custom sizes/shapes so maybe I'll go that route (I'm not a DIY person for stuff like this). Probably cover up doors with a trap and seal it off with some stripping to close the gaps. Gotta do something with the window, too... lots of work left to be done! Thanks for your help!

On the triangles, I'm just talking about simple sheets of MDF hung vertically maybe 6" down from the crest. Covering them with rigid fiberglass and cloth makes them better, but they'll absorb a good amount of low end all by themselves up there. Triangular just to follow the lines of the ceiling.

And use the 4" GIK's... 2" aren't going to go low enough.
