piano roll sounds muffled and quiet when i use sampled sounds?

I just got a MacBook air and have fl studio 10 running on windows 8 through boot camp. But anyways, when I put in notes for nexus or any other vst into the piano roll, it sounds just like the way it sounds when you play it on a midi. But when I use, say, a snare I got from a drum kit, it sounds muffled and much quitter than when I click the sample. How can I fix this problem?

this will most likely be related to the velocity assigned to the specific note in the piano roll - make it bigger and the sound should be come bigger as well

On the actual sampler, there might be another volume control, which could be set to a really low level
