Nord Lead 2/3 or a Korg Radias???

The radias is horrible, don't even consider it.

The MEK is great, can't go wrong.

The NL3 is great, very intuitive and versatile.

I would just get an Oberheim Matrix-1000 and a Sherman Filterbank. The 1000 presets should be plenty of bass and synth sounds for you. The filterbank (once you learn how to tame it) is very versatile. This will giver you classic, true analog Oberheim sounds, and great filter control. Probably a good fit until you get a little more experience.

Yep, in fact I never liked the sound of the pulse with the resonance knob turned up anyway. I always kept it at zero or close to it... I even played with the Filter envelopes to see if i could take take out the "Bow wowish sound". In the end after having it for half a year (if not a full year) I just decided that its sound just wasn't what I was looking for so I sold it.

Now I've read somewhere (I think it was in one of these threads on here) that the Dave Smith stuff sounds similiar to the Pulse on the low end. If this is so, I'm sure a Dave Smith Instrument would be right for me either.

This sounds more like an issue of user error to me than anything else. All subtractive synths are going to have that "wow" sound that you are describing. That is simpling what a filter sweep sounds like. If you want a certain kind of bass, you are going to have to learn how to program it. Try messing with FM or pulsewidth sweeps instead of, or in conjunction, with your filter envelope (which should have zero attack, a modest decay, close to no sustain, etc). The way you position the amp envelopes is pretty important too.

The MEK does far more than bass, but is monophonic. There is a 4 note poly rack unit, but it's about $1400.

Array: You very well could be correct in assuming the sound of the Pulse that I was experiencing was a "user error". However, on just about any machine I've ever had I'm usually able to program or modify a preset to get tones that I want. I've even been able to program a juno 106 to get bass tones that sounded closer to what I wanted than what the Pulse was able to give me. Now, I'm not saying the Pulse sounded bad, rather I'm just saying the sound of the unit and the way the unit functioned just wasn't my cup of tea. To each his own, but I think in the end it just came down to the fact that for the various reasons I just mentioned, the Pulse just didn't "do it" for me.

Anyhow, I noticed no one has mentiond any Viruses or anything. Is this a synth thas out of the question for bass and/synth sounds?

If you want to drop some cash, possibly go try out a virus at a music store and see if you might like that... it has somewhere to like 90voices of polyphony something like that... alright... you said you want some bass.. most bass don't need a third evelope to control pitch, unless you are doing some really intense breakcore/dnb/etc,etc. this synth has 4 osc, one being a sub osc with psuedo fm imposed if desired. also a hypersaw osc that adds 9 osc's on top of eachother without using 9 voices of polyphony, this adds up to if done correctly 2000 OSC at once. tell me that wont sound crazy. anyways it's 16 part multi-timber. stack up to 16 different sounds at once to create one sound, or use your sequencer to play 16 different sounds for differnt parts, bass/pad/lead/percussion/percussion times three more/effects/analog keys/ the whole works other than sampled rompler sounds. it will create almost any sound you can think of, you can even create a workable piano thing on there, it does really good on pads also and wierd effects. prety much a all around good synth that has superb osc algorithms and whatnot.. further more it has a emulated moog filter for a really nice roundness. if you are worried about the v/c pluggin thing that people are talking being a issue you can use the analog outs and connect to computer with midi and all will work fine. they got most of the bugs out of the synth but the usb intergration still is a little whacky... i could go on longer but i would just say go try it out at your local music shop if they have one.. also i just noticed that i have been talking about the Access Virus TI... but i think they all have the same sound engine, just different features.. but if you're goin' to buy one i would suggest the TI line of them.. they all have a really great sound... anyways i will stop now because i just want to put myself into dept by buying one right now.

my favorite synthpop bass sounds in the whole effing world come from a yamaha CS5!

hope i helped.

except i didn't, and i never do.

oops!

I wish I could try out a virus, but all the music stores in my area (Denver, CO) dont carry one. That said, I've never heard a virus except for the demo's I've heard on the net but they are all trancy and techno type stuff which I feel doesn't show off how the synth would work for ME because I don't make that style of music.

In any case, I've heard some good things about a Virus TI but I've also heard a lot of bad things as well. most of it considering the opinion that it is over-rated on a price per performance basis. But that's an entirely different thread so I'm not gonna discuss that here.

Anyway I think I've settled on what I wanted to use as my bass synth, I'm just a little confused on which one to get... perhaps I should make a new thread for that. :)

Well, if you're going to throw in the MEK in this thread, why not chuck in the Moog Lil Phatty
