No output signal from TASCAM US-1800, looking for advice

So I recently ordered a TASCAM US-1800 audio interface from the US (I'm living in Australia), but I'm unable to get my monitors to play any audio through it. I have tested the XLR inputs directly through to my monitors, and they are fine, but neither the monitors or headphones play anything but very soft static when I play sound files on my computer.

I have turned the 'mix' knob all the way right, so that it only receives a signal from the computer. I have turned up the input gain on monitors and monitor level on the interface. I have downloaded the most recent driver from the TASCAM website (for OS Mavericks), installed it and confirmed that the firmware is appropriate. My computer is detecting the presence of the interface when I plug it in. I am using two balanced 1/4" TRS to XLR cables, and Presonus Eris E5 monitors, but I simply can't get any sound out of them!

Does anyone have any suggestions? Have I missed something? Thanks in advance!

do you have a headphone signal? in the interface

my son has this but we are using win7 so can't help with the mac issues

confused as to why you would buy from the states when they are being sold at $375 here in Sydney

No headphone audio signal, unfortunately. I bought it for under $300

and shipping was?

ok now back to your problem

my guess is that you need to select the interface as your default in your daw

I do not use a mac for audio work, so do not what you would specifically need to do there - I can research it and talk you through it but I assume htat you can do that too

where in aus are you?

about $40. But yeah, when I was looking, the cheapest I could find in Aus was at least $420. Anyway...

I sort of doubt that would be the solution since I can't get any audio from the computer (internet, itunes, games, DAW etc.) to work through the interface and monitors. I've had a pretty good look through the manual, and not been able to find much more information on the net. I'm certainly open to whatever suggestions you have, even if its only to point me towards a good resource for research or troubleshooting.

I'm in Canberra.

Bugger! Wish I'd known sooner.

Thanks for the links and your help thus far. While my problem could be related to OS X Mavericks, I've never had a problem with the audio before. Audio plays fine through normal desktop speakers, the in-built speakers and headphones. It's only when I connect and select the interface that I get no sound.

I have tested the monitors with a mic check using the input of the interface, and they seemed to work fine, so I'm fairly sure it's either a hardware or software problem related to the interface itself.

hopefully png format works:

no core audio was what I wanted to see

have you tried the bit accurate driver for the 1800? Cna you show me that control panel setup as well?

the core audio driver is definitely problematic in that none of the channels can have their volume set and the master volume is at -infinity, i.e. no sound output is enabled

According to the TASCAM website, I won't be able to select the bit accurate option. Sure enough, I've tried double clicking or right clicking, and there is no way to assign input/output or sound effects/alerts through it.

And yeah, you're right, the core audio set up isn't looking good.

have you tried to move the master volume to the right in core audio? does it keep resetting itself to -infinity?

so definitely a core audio issue rather than a tascam driver issue then

you reckon? I don't fully understand what core audio is, so I don't really know where that leaves me in terms of solving the problem

report the problem to apple support and have them investigate it and determine if it is you, tascam's drivers or the os

ps do not accept their first second or third "it is you"' as in most cases they don't bother checking if the bug is them or you: just their s.o.p. to say you are the cause not us
