Need tight sequencer. What is best hardware alternative to MPC?

So much has been said 'bout the Akai MPC 2000 series. And while I agree that things such as "timing", swing, quantization, etc. are super tight, I don't really sample that much. I would hate to spend $2K on a unit just for it's sequencer. I wouldn't use it for much else. Is there anything on the market (old or new) that can give my drum sequences that tight "feel"? That "groove". I've considered the RM!x. Or maybe an older MPC version? Mostly interested in tight sequencing. Any suggestions? Thanx.........
 
Roland CDX-1...plus you'll get a digital multitrack recorder, sequencer, COSM effects, and you'll be able to burn your own CD's.

I have one, and I love it...The only thing is that It has cdrw media that it likes and some that it doesn't like, but it is not hard to find the right cdrw media.
 
i use a yamaha QY700 and love it.
mega tight timing plus a huge display with all you could ask for plus more.
used to have an RM1x. it was a great sequencer too. i ran my whole midi studio from it but eventually changed up to the QY.
 
Well if your not big into sampling but like the MPC series you could get the MPC 60 (if your comfortable buying used products). It'll run you 600-800 dollars and who knows you might dip into the world of sampling one day.. hell every producer does eventually. I know alot of big time producers that prefer the 60 over all of them! (Not that should sway your decision but just to let you know it has a PROVEN track record!)
