Need help remaking Bobby Valentino's Slow Down!

I started trying to do this a few weeks back but for some reason stopped. I just found the project again and thought i'd do it this time. I've got the drums more or less done so far just need to work on the sound selection. I'm having trouble making the melody though. I'm really basic on the keys so i've got no idea where to begin. I'm trying to play along but i'm not even playing in the right key which is really annoying considering the melody is about 4 notes. I know the song uses a sample but can somebody please help me remake it.

Can somebody tell me what key the melody is in? I'm about to look on Youtube for remakes so i can get an idea but i'll need some help from you guys.

Also, are there any programs that can help with stuff like this? Pitch detectors which can transpose melodies into the key i choose or something? I know Melodyne DNA does something like this and i'm about to look into that but is there anything else? I have big problems making melodies for my beats and i've got no idea where to start learning how to play properly so i need something to help me in the meantime.

All help is appreciated and i'll post up the remake while i go along.

I don't know how long you've been doing this, but I've been doing it for 5 years, and within the last 2 years I've gotten the ability to run my fingers across the keyboard and instantly know which Key it's in...Experience and Practice I guess...

As far as the percussion, it's a loop from a Sample CD, I forget which one though. Timbaland used the same loop on "Cop That Disc".

Good luck replaying it, even WHEN u get it, it wont sound as slick as the original from the movie nor the song, that instrumentation used with a piano, synth or trumpet, won't have the same feel.

both, "Slow Down" and "Tell me" are based on pieces from the Last Samurai soundtrack (Hans Zimmer).

"Slow Down" on "A way of life" and "Tell me" on "Small measure of piece".

listen to both. a lot of inspiration (it will also be easier to choose the right instruments to replay it).

It's been 15 months now since i made my first beat but i haven't learnt properly how to play the keys. I would love to learn how but i've got no idea how to go about it.

I've almost got the drums done. I know the original was a sample but i've already more or less done the drums with no problem. Thanks for the help, i'm gonna carry on remaking it and i'll post the MP3 here when i'm done.

I'm confused, it doesn't sounds like they used a piano, a trumpet or even a proper synth melody. I know it won't sound as good as the original though. That's obvious since i can't make an exact remake and mine won't be professionally mixed and mastered like the original was. Thanks for the comment though.

Thanks a lot. I've got the instrumental i'm working with. I put it into FL Studio and i was programming the drums while i was listening to it. I'll watch these videos now. It's amazing how something so simple can be so inspiring but i think that's because the melody was live instrumentation and you can feel the energy and emotion. If worst comes to worst i'll get my hands on the sample and use that like they did.
