Music Industry Point System ..... PLEASE EXPLAIN

Short Answer Point = Percent.

An artist usually gets somewhere between 3-12 points off his own album. Another say about 8-16 points is set aside for production usually. Producing 1 song won't get you many points off the album, but if they use your single for something it can add up.

Say you produce a track on an album with a beat from timbo on it, and they're giving him 3 points for his contribution. They won't have many points left to spread amongst every other producer on that album unless they short the main artist to compensate.

Wish I could give more definite answers, but every project is different and different points are distributed accordingly.

I'm about sell a beat to a cat def jam ......... my price for the beat

is 10G's since he's on a corporate label and i'm that huge yet.
First your right in saying your not huge yet but what the hell would you charge if you were huge? Your wrong in assuming since its a corporate label they will pay 10G's for an unknown beatmaker? I think once you present that price to them you dont need anyone to answer any of these questions cause they wont sign. You are pricing yourself out of a sale.

An entertainment lawyer can prepare all of this for you. Don't try and avoid using one or else its pretty guaranteed you will be screwed.

Thanks i appreciate it, I figured that much..

SEE A LAWYER, AN ENTERTAINMENT LAWYER, NOT JUST ANY LAWYER. IF YOU GET A LAWYER DEALING WITH JUSTICE OR CIVIL CRAP, DON'T WASTE TIME. GET AN ENTERTAINMENT LAWYER. OR AT LEAST A IP (INTELECTUAL PROPERTY) LAWYER!

EVERYTHING IS NEGOTIABLE, EVERYTHING!!!

Yes, I'm shouting, hence the caplocks.

This thread is old but just thought Id still point this out; I think that 3 point to 4 points for a producer is off. Ive seen contracts where producers have had a 20% Royalty and they're not neptunes or timbaland type producers. On top of that you can craft a contract at the time of beat sale requesting royalties for all profitable use of the beat, including singles, itunes, sales, etc.etc.

Very good info how did you come across def jam jus wondering
