I just got my hands on a MPC2000 classic. When I try to load a disc (Iomega Zip 250 ) via SCSI, the machine tells me to wait. I seem to be waiting forever. I then have to turn the machine off and then back on again in order to use it with just floppys. Everything else works just fine. If there is anyone else out there with the same problem, I would really appreciate your input.

Do you hear the drive spin when you try to load? If so, could be a bad disk, try another one. If not…

Check your SCSI IDs. There’s a switch on the back of the Zip...set it to 5.

And if the Zip is the only thing connected to the SCSI port…you need to turn Termination On…it’s on the back of the Zip.

The problem is the machine tells me to wait without the zip drive even connected. Rogue music in NYC tells me $125 to fix it. I just want to know what it is I'm fixing, is it worth fixing and keeping or just selling it as is?

You were expecting to be able to load samples from a drive that isn’t connected?

NO! Maybe I'm not explaining myself correctly. Only a moron would try to load sounds fron an unconnected drive. I'll try this again...WITH the drive connected, when I try to use the (EXTERNAL) zip drive, the machine tells me to wait. When I disconnect the drive, it (MPC) still tells me to wait. With the small amount of intelligence others believe I have. I came to the conclusion (can you believe I used my brain!) that it is not the drive with the problem. (THE QUESTION) Has anyone else (persons other than me) ever experience that problem with a MPC 2000? And if so, what was the problem, and how was it solved. Anyone with helpful comments or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Are you loading the OS Floppy that you have to load everytime you turn the machine on?

I wasn’t trying to insult your intelligence…I just didn’t understand why you said that. I see your logic now…but that test doesn’t show anything. If you have the wrong Termination setting on the back of the Zip…it will do exactly what you’re saying…act as if it is disconnected (even though it is connected).

That’s why I suggest you check the back of the Zip…make sure Termination is On and set the SCSI ID to 5.

Try that and see what happens.

With the zip drive connected, load the os by floppy. Then try loading sounds from the zip.

make sure you are using the correct cable. I remember trying and old computer cable i had lying around the house and it gave me an error like that. The machine gets "locked" in waiting and you have to restart the MP again and u are back to normal. Is that what happens? When i got the correct cable DB25 to DB25 then I was good. no problems. Maybe your cable is a parallel printer cable (by any chance?). If you have the correct cable then what metastatik suggested would be the next step. As well as changing the FLOPPY field to SCSI on the main screen. When that is engaged you should hear the Zip spin. when you hear that use the DATA wheel and look for SCSI 5. You may have to pass SCSI 5 and come back until the MP recognizes it. You should be in business at that point. Also remember to turn on the ZIp first then the MP. You don't want to bllow out your SCSI port. :)
