major and minor chords

I was wondering is a minor chord the dark sad type chord and major the happy type chord? Or is it the other way around?

at its simplest we describe major as happy and minor as sad (but hardly ever dark)

Sure, that's mostly accurate. I always think of chords/notes/anything musical as "relative" sounds, i.e. how a chord sounds depends on what other chords are played in the progression. For example, C Major is usually a bright, happy, chord. But, if I play Emaj, Ebmaj, Cmaj; it whole thing sounds kind of weird/spooky
