Just got a macbook from some one that said its broke . when I turn it o all i get is a black with a file with a question mark in the middle. I dont have any disc or anything.. What should I do?

What are the specs on it? Definitely take to a an Apple store and have it checked out.
Could be the HD is crapped out which is an easy fix. Or the memory is shot which is even easier and cheaper to fix. If the logic board is bad, part it out on Ebay where you could get about $300 for it.
