Ok, to try and help clean the forum a bit and enable a number of questions to be answered swiftly - there will be a sticky here with lists of recommended VSTs. To start with it may be a bit messy but it will be tidied up in due course (shareware / freeware/ instruments / effects etc).

Please feel free to post lists (preferably with links and basic details).

All links and lists will be copied to my original post so as to keep them all in one (save reading through a large thread) - and evetually all replies will be deleted to keep it clean.

Rough Rider is a modern compressor with a bit of "vintage" style bite and a uniquely warm sound. Perfect for adding compression effects to your drum buss, it also sounds great with synth bass, clean guitar, and backing vocals. Definitely not an all-purpose compressor, Rough Rider is at its best when used to add pump to rhythmic tracks. Of course, you can use it however you'd like. OSX/Windows:

http://www.betabugsaudio.com/plugs.php
GetaBlitchJR - GetaBlitch Jr. is a sequenced gate effect
SpinBug - combines a traditional "rotary speaker" effect with a set of new possibilities and parameters
Chorrosive - Chorrosive is a simple device: it accepts audio in, runs it through various types of battery acid,
SVF? - SVF2 is a 2-pole State Variable Filter (12 dB/oct
W1Limiter - The BetabugsAudio edition of George Yohng's W1 takes the same spectacular limiting engine and gives it a new interface
CrayonFilter - Crayon Filter is a multi-band filter plug-in.
FlofiDeluxe 1.1 - We are proud to announce the release of our newest plug-in: FLOFIdeluxe, which could happen to be described as a pitchdestroying- frequencyshapeshiftinggraintool
MonstaChorus - is a true analog style stereo chorus effect with a simple set of controls and fantastic sound quality

http://www.digitalfishphones.com/main.php?item=2&subItem=3
Many Plug-ins, including Dominion (signal shaping) and Endorphin (dual-band compressor).BLOCKFISH is a versatile compressor with countless ways to shape the incoming audio. SPITFISH is a dead-easy to use de-esser, aimed mainly at mono or stereo vocal tracks. FLOORFISH is a simple expander / gate device, easy to set up and offers a broad variety of processing, ranging from slight expansion, backgound noise attenuation to extreme gating effects. .

The goals were simple - make a series of VST plugins that works, feels, looks and most importantly sounds as good as a classic hardware unit

http://www.greenoak.com/crystal/download.html
Crystal Soft Synth: Crystal is a semi-modular software synthesizer featuring both subtractive synthesis and frequency modulation (FM) synthesis. It offers abundant modulation control with over 90 parameters which may be modulated, multi-stage envelopes with graphical editors, extensive tempo sync of envelopes/lforates/delay times, built-in effects for chorus/flanging/comb filtering/echoes, and a band splitter for effects processing by frequency band. Not only that, Crystal has wave sequencing, granular synthesis, program morphing, MIDI learn, and imports soundfonts. The musical applications for Crystal are literally boundless.

I was wondering if you guys had any advice on free tube emulater/tape saturation or tape delay and a good gate/trance gate.
TaintedHelix:
TrAmp - by Krakli
Here's what the site's description says:
"After a request from the user of the Strat-A-Various, we developed this Filter, Distortion, Phazing, Echoing Monster.."

Maelcum - by Tweakbench
Describe as a "tape-like delay module". Sounds kind of close to what you're looking for.

SplitGateVST - by Sanus|artificium
I've used this one a couple times, and it's surprisingly useful. Pretty cool gate effect.

Gate3 - by xoxos.net

The site described it as a "host-synced... creates cross-rhythm effects, randomised amplitude, modulative gating period..."

Badamp - by Ralph Gonzalez
Seems like a tube-amp simulator to me. Weren't you looking for one?

TapeDelay - by E-Phonic
Another tape-delay effect

Krushing:
ArcDev's ET-200 and DubbBox - the latter can be probably found somewhere from KvR - I remember it being mentioned and linked to in a "best tape delay plugin" thread or something like that, but it's never been officially released...

FabFilter Timeless - a lot of hype and good reviews. I've yet to check out this new beast in the house.

Interruptor's plugs - a collection of different "vintage-style" delay plugins.

There may be better of course, these are just the ones I like the most/ have some experience with. Also all fairly pricy minus TruePianos which is a bad a** price for such a glorious piano (I love the emerald)

You can Google any of these; they are all freely available legally. The ‘CM’ ones need a purchase of a magazine, but you get a lot of good stuff for the $15 asking price, so I still consider it ‘free’.

Synths
Wusikstation CM – free with Computer Music mag
Zebra CM – same as above
Alpha CM – good for bass
Dominator CM – another great freebie with CM magazine
Acid Rack – awesome trance synth with fat sound
DavoSynth – analog emulation, sounds great
Crystal – voted best ever free synth on KVR
Element of Surprise – great for ‘never before heard’ sounds (u have to sample it)
Entrancer – psy synth with tb style pattern sequencer
FSR Morphite – great for weird morphing sounds
Image Line Autogun – 4 billion presets...
RMXL/ RichMan CM – good all rounders
Superwave P8 – Roland emulation
SxMJune – Juno reproduction. Sounds very good.
Unknown 64 Pro – C64 sounds!

Effects
Ohmygod – filter
Crayon – filter
Butterworth – filter
Single Knob Filter - filter (pioneer mixer emulation)
GHi/Glow - Filters
FM Crusher – distortion
E-Phonic XPressor – great compressor
Blockfish – ‘character’ compressor
Monomaker – everyone needs this one for bass/vocals etc
Free Haas – haas effect software (usually costs an arm and a leg)
Big Tick Hexaline – fancy delay unit
Tal TiltEQ – ‘character’ EQ
MEqualizer – free EQ that performed very well in blind tests against Waves EQ’s
Voxengo SPAN – extremely useful analyser
WideBug – nice sounding stereo spread
Ambience – clean reverb
SIR – IR reverb – performs well in blind tests with PerfectSpace (using the same impulses)
Chopper – trance gate
StormGate – best.ever.trancegate
