Anyone know of any laptops with good sound cards? I would like to use my laptop as a kind of 3rd turntable. Only most laptops have pretty poor sounding audio.

Anyone found a better way?

Chris

Thanks for the tip... only the Tascam US428 is not exactly portable.

Which sound card have you used?

Also, anyone run Protools on a laptop?

Chris

If you had a Mac I suppose everyone would advise you to get Digidesign's Mbox which is very portable.

I wouldn't know what to use for a laptop that is portable, I use a stationary computer with an EMU APS so I really can't help you further than that. Sorry. Check with your nearest retailer and see if they can sort you out with some nice kit.

i have a PowerBook G4, it has no analogue sound in, and the analogue line out is pretty noisy.

However, a number of pro manufacturers make some cheap and small USB audio I/O boxes, check Edirol for example.

the absolute best solution for a laptop is the echo gina laptop :) its a regular gina breakout box with a pcmcia card instead of a pci card. or if u want th ebest of the best try a layla. :)

David Miles Huber, writing in a September 2002 Electronic Musician review of the M-Audio Duo and Quattro USB interfaces, said of his test machine:

"A lot of people have been buying [the Dell Inspiron 8100] for audio applications because of its high display resolution, dual-monitor capabilities, and high-quality onboard audio card."

ive got an inspiron 8200. its got pretty decent sound but i run an echo layla off of it :D. i just bought a new soundcard for my gf's laptop tho. an echo indigo. its pretty simple pcmcia card with two beautiful sounding outputs. check it out, its pretty cheap......

Emagic EMI 2|6 is pretty dope. uses ASIO drivers so it works with almost everything. cheque it out

i agree undercurrent, the inspiron 8200 has decent sound for a notebook but still i would use an external sound card. my extigy works for what i do, but i wish i had asio drivers for it. however the extigy is good for it's cost and has built in dolby digital decoder for my xbox! :victory:

Hmmm... I wonder if this countervailing mini-consensus calls into question Huber's review of the M-Audio boxes... which he also said had good sound.

This highlights the problems with evaluating converters. We just don't seem to have generally understood objective performance specs and stats that reflect quality of converters (and I don't really know of any).

I have to keep reminding myself of the pcmcia card solutions to the outboard converter issue. Anybody have a downside on pcmcia converters?
