Does anyone know about the Korg D3200 Digital multitrack studio? if i want to make professional recordings do you think i should learn how to master the vocals on the mixer itself or export the wav files and import it to a computer for mixing/mastering?

I've owned and used the D16 since it was introduced (I was on the waiting list for the first shipment) Anyway, I used it exclusively until I got into computer recording. From that point, I did all my mixing/recording in the Korg then bounced down to wav for "mastering" purposes. I now use the D16 mainly as a mixer and analog/digital converter. Meaning I run all inputs through the D16 and then out using the optical output and into my soundcard. That way once my signals are in the korg, it stays in the digital domain.
For specific purposes, I record in the Korg then send to computer for mixing. I get great results that way.
Obviously, I think there is strength in using them together. Just my opinion...

oh so for one of your methods you run the inputs into your sound card and then into a DAW on your computer?

ON my KorgD16 there is an optical output. I run the optical output into the optical input of my soundcard. So basically anything that is inputed into the Korg is sent to the computer digitally. This way I'm not using the converters on my soundcard, which are inferior compared to those on the Korg. Just gives a bit cleaner signal. Plus, if I need to record multiple tracks simultaneously, I record into the Korg. Then I sync the Korg to my soundcard and pull the tracks out. Hope that makes sense....

^zionproductions,
I have the D1600 and have thought of using it the same way but never knew how. When you mention the optical input/output are you referring to the S/PDIF ins and outs? I know on my 1600 it was extra, how much did it cost you? Did it come preinstalled or did you install it yourself? If so, was it easy to install? Also, what software program are you recording into? does the S/PDIF "split" the tracks, meaning does it send 16 tracks to your program you're recording in?

Yes the optical S/Pdif in and out. ON the D16, it was pre-installed. I have a Triton, though, and added a SCSI card to it. Very simple...if that helps. The output does not split the tracks. However, you can sync your D1600 to the computer using MIDI and record each track individually. Another option (I use a combination of both) is to do submixes in the D1600 and then pull those out. Such as mix all four channels containing drums (I use automation in the KOrg) Then record those tracks as a stereo track into the computer (I use Cubase Sx).

This adds time to the process, but in my opinion, the end result is better. I mainly record guitar and sometimes vocals like this. Then add eq and effects in my korg. I then perform a mix and record out into the computer. From there I have a nice tone that I can still work with. HOpe that helps...You can also go straight out of the D16 into the computer. Better AD/DA conversion than most reasonably priced soundcards...
