Just got Beat Thang Virtual

this machine has a sequencer, sampler, and 3000 sounds... it has FX, 16 trx, and built in memory... it has a usb port, 2 memory card slots, and midi in/out... a mic jack, a 1 octave keyboard and a color LCD... damn, if i didnt know any better i wouldve thought this was a new Fantom or Motif... i dont really see the prob... can anyone clear this up for me?

so for me...that's the "enticement" of the beat thang if you will.

flexible enough for me to make music without the computer yet it can still integrate with the computer easily.

I just don't see what's so new about this thing that can't already be bought in hardware or software form for half the price or better. You know you can get a MC-909 AND a MPC1000 for the same price. I just don't see why anybody would want one of these unless they just wanted to like one to be different. What is the selling point of this thing that will make me, the consumer feel the urge to buy. I'm not biased to hate it, I just don't see what is so innovative about it.

I told why I want it, I told why I don't want a 1k or anything else.

I've laid it out many times why PERSONALLY I plan to get it.

I already have an mpc, I don't want another one, I barely use the one I have anymore.

Go back up and read the reasons I gave for wanting it...maybe then you'll be less confused lol.

can you take your 1k with you on a plane without having a converter to hook it up? Not talking about some hack job either, I mean straight out of the box?

What about your samples? Are they instantly available like the onboard sounds that come with the 1k? Or do you have to load them?

What about when you're done making the track on the 1k, will it just drag over to your mpc 1000 software? Will it stream your audio via usb?

those are some of the things that excite me.

I definitely think it's a step in the right direction.

But even though I don't have to look at the pc, I can't use machine away from my computer.

I don't know why MOTU didn't do the same thing as NI with their stuff, and create a controller for it.

lol dude, I said it's all personal opinion man, that's what I've been saying this whole freakin thread man....

features and performance are subjective, it's all about how it fits into your setup.

some folks just don't like software man...period. For me, I didn't use it for a long time because I use computers all day long, so I didn't want to come home and look at them for making music.

It wasn't until I started trying different software that I saw the potential. It still took me a while, as none of them really worked how I liked to work...until I used ableton live.

then it was over and I had to look around and see why I had all this freakin gear lol.

and then...the sales began!

but yes, it's all personal opinion man, I've always said that, and will continue to say that. Everyone has to make the choice for themselves what they will and won't use and why.
 
ever since i bought the RS in 2002, ive seen the birth of the MPC 4000, 1000, 2500, and the 500... the MV8000, and 8800, all the Motifs and the Fantoms... Reason, FL, all types of MPDs SPs, blah blah blah... and EVERY time theyve come out, all i heard from people was "yo, this sh!t's hot, im gettin it as soon as it comes out!!!" i dont see the big difference between this machine and those except that this is NOT from Yammy, Korg, Akai or Roland... they put in the same features the others did, added even more stuff, then made it battery powered... if NO ONE buys it, i'll still have it... only a sh!tty review or a weak sampler/sequencer will deter me... as of rite now, thats not the case.

Can I take my MPC on a plane? Hell yea fam Virgin Airlines you plug it right into the outlet.... so... Yes.
Now if your talking about something like Southwest or Continental, then no. However....why would I bring my MPC on a plane in the first place when I can bring my more portable more powerful Macbook.

Second of all it is impossible for anything to be instantaneous everything must load at some point in time or you would never be able to access the data on it, and if I put the sounds on my CF or HD then it can load when I turn it on.

And finally....lol. MPC software? Why in the world would I need that. The only reason anythings coming off the MPC is to be tracked out in Reaper. I have no intentions of using my MPC as a midi controller for a virtual instrument otherwise I would have bought an MPD.

The worst thing about BPM is if they would have made that a real piece of hardware it would have been ridiculous. When I first saw it I was like wow...selling the MPC, but then I found out it's really just a glorified GURU with a bigger sound library.

All I can say is this. I have found myself to be more into keys than pads, which is why Im selling my MPC; but, if NI releases a keyboard with the same concept as Maschine.... it would be over. Price it at under $1000 and it would change beat making for good.

didn't know that man lol...never flew virgin, also, I have the 4k, I'm not bringin that with me anywhere lol.

I like that it's portable yo, maybe thats just me. I don't use my mpc as much anymore because ableton live and other software vsts have pretty much taken over my life, workflow is much easier, and I can get my ideas out a lot quicker.

I still like the concept of hardware working with software like maschine, but the hardware still being stand alone, that's dope to me.

ni keyboard version of the maschine concept would be dope for sure!
 
Is this thing stand alone only, or is it a vst/rtas plug-in too?
 
at the moment it is stand alone, they are adding vst/plugin support in the next update.
 
They should have let some people beta test first. It's a nice program, and you can't beat the price, but I still want to be able to open in it Live or Pro Tools and track it out that way. I think by them releasing it first and then adding vst/plugin support, it's a fraud.

That means that everyone that buys it in the hopes of using it as a plug in will be paying to do the beta testing for them.
 
Let me ask you this, are the samples in a .wav format, or is it some proprietary Beat Thang only format?

If it's .wav, then it's worth the $150 for the samples alone.
 
well that means they didn't read the specifications, it doesn't say it is a vst plugin yet, so anyone buying it for that reason is wrong. I agree it would be nice to have had that from the beginning, but it's just a software addition so i'm not worried about it. It's still a young software, and if the listen to their users like they say, it will be a good one for years to come.

I think it's proprietary but I will double check. I don't remember if I looked at the actual raw sample folder or just the "presets" folder. Let me check when I go home for lunch and I'll let you know.

I think this is where Akai truly dropped the ball with the MPC 5000. It's specs are not as good as the 4000, and it's computer integration isn't much better either. I think the Beat Kangz are on the right page when it comes to computer integration, but they need to make it a plug in. That would make it the ultimate.


Can you imagine having a drum machine that's truly stand alone, and then when you want to record it into your computer, it opens as as a fully automatable plugin with 16 or 32 virtual outputs that can be recorded simultaneously into the DAW of your choice?

dude, that's coming lol...real talk! I just checked, the factory samples are proprietary lol...they aaint havin no sound piracy lol.

but I just got through talkin to Aja the pres...vst is gonna be crazy man. Imagine even having the hardware with you...then just transfering to the software and opening in your favorite daw for tracking lol...

it's gonna be crazy man.

even now it's dope, but it's going to get much better, I'll keep my site updated with all the latest info!

I spend more time looking into 3d animation than into music production these days, so I haven't been in tune with the new audio gear marketing. I heard of Maschine right away tho lol.

It is more expensive than I thought it would be, but a lot of new products are. Once some R&D gets paid for maybe it'll go down in price. Or if it's a flop it'll definitely go down in price.

A lot of producers don't spend money practically though. It's not uncommon to hear of producers who bought sonar, live, cubase, AND logic lol. So it wouldn't be unheard of for somebody with an mpc, etc., to get a beat thang.

Tell the BEAT KANGZ to have some contests and give away like 10 Beat Thangz. There's no better marketing than contests. People get to have the machines for free and then they tell everybody else how they like it.

I should get the first free one for having the idea. I'll tell everybody and their mama!

its $999 if u order online, so i expect that price to remain when it hits the streets... thats the same as the MPC1000, with alot more inside... i think its a good price... of course i'd love it to be cheaper, but if u paid for the MPC i dont see the prob with payin for this.

at this time, the only thing i dont like right now is the fact that it uses an adapter instead of a 3 prong ground plug.
