it seems im always asking something. so now i want to know about movies/documentaries. please add to this list

harder they come
rockers
life and debt
Sly & Robbie: Strip to the Bone (anyone seen this? erotic music videos or some thing)
catch a fire

roots, rock, reggae - excellent documentary on 70's JA music scene

country man - "science, man....." a bit cheesy but it more than makes up for it in photography and character. get the dvd if you can, its got extensive interviews with the star of the film.

there have been tons of video films released recently featuring big name JA artists, i generally find them lacking in terms of entertainment value but its always cool to see famous dancehall artists broadening their horizons, and twice as cool watching JA rediscover its film industry which pretty much went fallow for something like 20 years, probably because of the political violence in the late 70's, early 80's..

ichi you're right on Countryman is a classic!

The Lunatic (really well done version of the book)

One Love (also a nice film with Kymani Marley, saw a screening of it)

Smile Orange

KLA$H w/ Jasmine Guy- an interesting film, i was impressed by her effort, and Lucien Chen is masterful as Mr Lee the bad guy

Babylon - a UK film haven't seen but apparently about the 70s scene in West Indian Brixton, I think Aswad and some others contributed to this

of course, the Palm Pictures series: Dancehall Queen & Third World Cop

To see a bit of Jamaica how it used to be:

Ska At The Sombrero Club circa 1963 i think (a great documentary featuring Ronnie Nasrala teaching "the ska" and some live club footage of Byron Lee backing a lot of early greats- a VERY young Jimmy Cliff, Toots, Stranger Cole & Patsy, and a few others)

Dr No - some interesting clips of Jamaica circa 1962 w/ our favourite secret agent- note that the late Reggie Carter (The Lunatic, Royal Palm Estate) plays the chaffeur who tries to kill Bond in the beginning

Live & Let Die - a little less revealing than Dr No, but still some nice scenes beyond the usual "tourist" kind of movies

All the foreign films:

How Stella Got Her Groove Back
Cool Runnings
Cocktail
Club Paradise
The Mighty Quinn (fairly well done I think and more local in flavour)

Engineroom - You know your stuff man. Smile Orange was a tuff movie though. There was a series that used to come on in the early 90's about some Jamaican clinic/hospital with some American med students/doctors that was pretty good. I forgot the name of it though.

There is another documentary called "The Story Of Jamaican Music" based of this book/cd collection I think.

bty anyone know how the song "passa passa" was taken? as a dis or as comedy? **** it cracks me up

rude boy is garbage...the star (the mad yute inna dancehall queen)is supposedly a bad bwoy from the streets but talks with a prep school accent...storyline was so-so...over-all it gets a D

shottas was good but kinda far-fetched IMO...i hear they got a part 2 in the works

just saw an old movie with vybz kartel the other day..very low budget called "thug life"

Rockers is my **** for real.I love the opening scene with The Abyssinians and my other favorite scene is the takeover lol that **** is gansta. But havin all them old skool heads and the plot makes that one of my favorite movies of all time.
