Is it wrong that Rap and R&B are grouped together?

I just realized, we always kinda just took it at face value, Hip Hip and R&B.

But in hindsight is this kind of odd?

If you think about it they are vastly different genres. I also realize a lot of people who prefer Rap don't venture to R&B much and people who like R&B usually have an attitude of contempt towards hard rap. I could see how in the past they got grouped together.

But why is it that they have to be together?

We don't go around grouping Metal & Country together? Theres no Metal & Country Music Talk section.

I might be looking to deep into it, cuz it just seems like a broad grouping... but it is the past and the past is always suspect...

just food for thought? i just thought of this on a whim wondering if it strikes anyones curiosity as well.

coming to think of it there isn't a country section....WTF FP!??!??

i think on this site in particular it just works well, the modern producer from what i've seen tends to gear towards both genres, and musically it's as accessible to the upcomers (fl studio, reason, etc...)

never crossed my mind thinking of it now..

I think it's very interesting.. it's been this way for a long time-- Hip-hop sees R&B as soft, R&B sees Hip-hop as digression. Teddy Riley definitely bridged that gap with New Jack Swing back in the day which created a blur in the dividing line but the feelings never completely dissolved. I think it's become just a lazy way to say "music that most negro folk listen to" since it's really mainly those two genres. Not trying to say all black people listen too strictly R&B and Hip-hop (I sure as hell don't) but in the eyes of the observer that's pretty much the case.

Plus I'm willing to bet there are a lot more R&B fans who will sit through a rap track and vise versa than there are country fans who will sit through a metal cut.

pop+rock = pop rock (gets grouped together just as much as rnb and hip hop)

metal and country? eww??... lol...

rnb+hip hop fuse together perfectly because they have alot in common.. it's hella easy to crossover between the two, that's prolly why people do it alot and maybe the main reason why their always smashed together like that...

Nah, its a reasonable grouping. As long as they separate it when it matters (Awards, billboard, etc). I'm sure there is "best R&B" and "best Rap" separately. Its like Funk and Soul or Rock and Pop as someone has already said.
