its one of those things where ive realized why i like a certain song and its not because of the beat or jay-z's rapping

to me, if alicia keys wasnt wailing like she was and the hook was any different
i wouldnt be into it

also the beat is very bland for the verse
but it is just my opinion

yup. when that hook comes on...ITS A WRAP! alicia did her thing...im still waiting to see if we will get a lil mama remix haha

its about the songggggggggg not the beat

do u realize how bland/wack the empire state beat is?
would u even play it without te alicia keys hook?

its about the song

It's ashame how many people really dont get this. It's about the song not the beat. I like the beat but it's all about the final product. That Swizz track/beat are both horrible though, lol.

no it isnt lol.. come on. its definitely not horrible. i respect your opinion, but credit when credits due man.

It was definitely the wackest beat on the album, but one of the hottest songs.

This song has been on repeat since I got the cd. Its definitely my theme song of 2009.

man i dont understand how some of ya'll can say that its wack. makes no sense to me. the drums on it were on point, the tom rolls were excellent to me. the vibraphone melody was there for a reason, the song mainly focuses on jay's childhood and the use of vibes is usually combined with childish things (think the rugrats theme). if anything, its kind of a childish melody, kind of "cheesy" in a way. it was produced that way to capture a certain emotion in time if you will. i loved the trumpet vibrato/tremolo.

all of you need to give me some reasons why the song wasnt well produced.

Damn Katastrophe. i was just posting this:

Am I the only one who thinks this doesnt sound like the Minnie Ripperton sample used by Junio Mafia? (PS I didnt see Pharell credit this sample. It's clearly a replayed synth version)

Yeah, same thing just not near as good haha.

So why Just Blaze didn't make the album? Why not Ski and Irv Gotti? Why J.Cole, Cudi, Drake who haven't been on the scene long enough to "go way back" with him?

Pharrell has the ability to make artists see his vision when he gives them a track. Nothing more, nothing less. A "hot beat" is nothing more than ones opinion. And honestly, many producers are so engulfed in what they consider "hot" that their opinions are tainted.

Not saying I like the beat or think it's hot. Just saying I can admit my sole opinion is no reflection on what fans who don't make beats enjoy.

exactly.... why not SKI!!!??

if some one puts on a television show that you hate
and sits and explains WHY you should like the show
because its DIRECTED like this and CASTED like that
and the SCENES are shot in such a way

does it somehow make you enjoy the show all of a sudden?
cuz thats whats happening here.

i am simply just posting the qualities that everyone should DEFINITELY notice about this song.

this track is actually good.. I think you might think it's cheesy.... but actually, it's a very musical track, a lot of live instruements, it's quite dope. And it has a good feeling about it. the beat itself got some emotion.
The articulation of the instruments have a meaning and a coherence that you can't find in a beat made by a rookie i think.
pharell never fails to deliver...
I don't think I could ever hear a beginner with such sound quality...

It's quite refreshing, that's why i like it... this track is enjoyable for that. some cheesy "on purpose" professional production

[edit] hadn't read burnem's posts. I guess it was quite a success in what Pharell did if several people can capture the same thing about that beat.

Interesting, I don't hear any live instruments besides possibly the piano.

@ katastrophe777

There are Horns, Piano and Vibraphone. (the tom roll may just be a loop or electronic drums or it could possibly be live)

these sounds are most likely from a keyboard, but im sure most cant notice whether or not they are.

Oh, I hear what you are saying now. Definitely all sounds from keyboards though. That tom roll sounds more like a record scratch of some sort to me but I don't know.
