if all you do is make beats, then fine. but i hate the word "producer" being tossed around

Yep, and I am not one (right now - but I have been in the past)

Beat maker isn't a put down and I don't think you meant it as one, you're just calling a spade a spade.

Somebody finish these sentences...

I make beats, therefore I am a ___________

I produce records, therefore I am a __________

I make beats, therefore I am a __Beat Maker___

I produce records, therefore I am a __Producer___ :D

I think of a producer as someone who uses a variety of resources to come up with the final version. I guess this why beatmakers consider themselves producers.

I just go by the Wikipedia definition because it makes the most logical sense to me

Hip hop production - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

At least in hip hop, hip hop producer and beatmaker are used interchangeably as the person who creates the instrumental "beat"

Record producer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A "Record" producer is the person responsible for managing the recording session, directing the artist, getting session musicians if need, basically making the song sound as good as possible

In hip hop if you just make the beat you are a beatmaker/producer however that does not make you a "Record" producer

Feel free to disagree just makes the most logical sense to me..

I completely agree.

Lex can switch it up artist keep asking him for the same types of beats though lol..

dude is on the 2nd year of a great run in producing. It has to be one of the best runs by a producer with a specific signature sound for as long as i can remember. Lil Jon had a great run with his "crunk" style but his beats varied somewhat as opposed to all lex lugers beats sounding very similar

Cats used to say Lil Jons beats all sound the same too lol. The last producer I can think of that did a lot of major similar sounding work as the new guy is probably Danja around 2008

I remember 9th wonder saying something similar about artists requesting the same sounds they'd heard him do for others and this is where you have to be careful not to get too type casted so to speak and everyone starts thinking you're only good for one sound which gets played out really fast.

As far as software goes i prefer FL Studio i always though it was under rated as for what it could do but if it's finally getting some recognition in the production community then great. But i will say tho that yes, i tend to use it more for beat making and some mixing. It lacks some of the ease of use of programs like Acid Pro & Pro Tools when you're recording live instruments in a multi-track production layout. So i usually end up making my beats in FL Studio and recording vocals in Pro Tools (used to use Acid Pro 6 before)

ProTools is and will be the standard for AUDIO... FL Studio has a following because its cheap AND it can do audio and MIDI decently... but neither AWESOMELY

The first DAW I was trained on was Pro Tools, and a whole lot of recording studios jumped on that bandwagon, but I still find it's highly overrated. Most other DAW's seem more attuned to actual musicians. I guess Pro Tools is good if you need SMPTE though.

  • there is no real way to prove this...
  • And when you say, is FL the industry standard.... ?
  • that would mean that the Majority of people in the Music Industry use FL studio...
  • well this is not true...

  • the majority of producers in the "Industry" are NOT using FL although there are still many Producers who do choose to use FL...

  • A good question would Be, is FL studio Popular? Is Everybody and there grandma using it? ....

  • YES... but is it the industry standard....NO :)

Logic and kontakt is all you need. Pronto.
Kontakt is cool and all but what about when I want to get really in depth with a synth and not just rely on its presets? I forget what synths come in Logic but I am sure the other synths in Komplete are very useful if not more useful than kontakt

you cant get more in-depth than absynth and massive...
Absynth is a great product. It can go very in depth but i am wondering as far as sound creation capabilities how far can it really be pushed. I mostly used it for presets. I would think that something like Omnisphere or even Thor could probably be pushed harder. I wish I took the time to actually learn it at times.

I might look into it doubtful though as I am not really looking into adding much more as far as soft synths go.

FL studio is perfect for everything as far as i can tell . Industry standard or not , its easy to use , it has the most amazing interface , so workflow is great and it makes experimenting with everything fun again . But as far as i can see it , it won't be an industry standard until it looks like as complicated as the Big Bang theory. Just because it doesn't look professional doesn't mean squat ;) .

fl is the easiest to learn and the easiest to pirate. For people who don't pirate it is really cheap. I use reason for production though not fl studio
