Hi,
I am planning to learn music production and become a music producer, but I feel it's late to start learning music at age of 23, because everybody learns music when he's young! I've been puzzled by this quesion for days.
Can anybody tell me the Reason why it's late or not ????

man its never too late a lot of people start at your age you are actually young by a producers standard. I know people that are seriously getting into this and a couple of them are in their early 40s.

If you love music and its something you'd love to do and you have the means to do it then DO IT!.

its really that simple. If you really dedicate yourself to it and are willing to take criticism and learn then you may pick it up really fast.

Peace

Its never too late mate. Depends how much motivation you have got coz this art takes a lot of patience and perserverance. But if you don't know **** about music then start reading and watching tutorials. Beatmaking aint hard, but making a good beat is. You have to do it for the love of music and the money aspect is just a bonus.

Peace

It's not too late! you've got a good 70 or so years left! If you're looking at it as a source of income, it may take a long while before you get good enough to make money from it, but my opinion is that anybody getting into music for money is always going to be too late, no matter how early they start. They miss the point. If you want to learn to make music because you love it, then you're right on time.

many experts will tell you that learning certain things are harder the older you get, the main reason why there are Elementary schools that offer many second language courses, I'd say actually learning the music theory is more difficult at 23 then say 8, especially if your teaching yourself, but you can learn to make beats pretty easily and still pick up some theory, even if you want to get full into theory just know that your gotta have to have that childhood enthusiasm (trying to get straight As rather then trying to get a C so you don't get that ass whooped when you get home)

I'm 24 and I just started this year.

THis was posted recently in a thread in the hiphop forum.

Interesting thread coming from bigmoz. I consider you one of the "sure things" around here. Cory got you down? lol.
I just read an article about Manuel Seal, producer of Usher make me wanna and Mariah. He started his career at 31 and he made a point that if he liked playing pool and did it every day for 5 years he would be great at it. So for myself if I don't start making a living from this pretty soon, I'll get a full time job and still push my skills and believe it'll eventually happen.

I've been digging up contacts lately and there are several big managers and labels that listen to unsolicited material.More than I expected. Lil jon's label, for example has signed most of their acts from demos mailed in. So the opportunities are there.

I've heard that success happens when preparation meets opportunity, so since the opportunities are there , it's just a matter of preparation.

I don't think age or starting time, etc. need be taken overly seriously as a predictor of your own success in something.

Most people start at the average time. Less people start early. Less people start late.
If you start late, then you're just filling out the part of the spectrum of people who start late.

Go pick up some gear and give this thing a go.

I guess the other side of it would be all the skills/experience/resources/abilities you have that a younger person wouldn't have the benefit of.

We gotta use those powers!

Your not too late, I didnt learn music when I was young, I cant read music but I can make some beats, instrumentals or whatever. Producers like Mannie Fresh, he can't read music either but you see how many records hes sold and how sought after he is. Its all on you if your willing to learn how to "make music" as long as you're not deaf, you shouldnt even worry about starting at 23

yeah its true that you learning stuff at a younger age is easier, but i dont think thats true of music theory. im sure you will develop your ear to an advanced standard if you start banging on piano keys at 5, but i took piano lssons as akid and didnt learn half as much on Theory as i have in th past year. a non native speaker of french who starts learning at 2 or 3 will pick up the language incredible quick, but their grammer will remain substandard till they are MUCH older.

back to the main topic. i started at 22. last night and only 1 year on i found myself in a studio recording a track for someones ep and live performance. i learned a **** load in just 1 year. youll be 24 and be like ' damn if i had only started up last year id be the **** by now' dont wait. do it now.

I'm 24 and I started a year ago and all of the language and terminology, different things of that nature came to my understanding the more I kept on trying to make beats, I couldn't understand for the life of me why or how some albums or wack songs get released with all of the pros in the industry. With an undying love for Hip Hop and music as a whole I just messed around and ended up studying all the music I heard and trying to recreate it on my own, that's where trial and error started to take place and I started coming with my own beats, my own melodies, and then all of that grew to sampling and understanding which has now developed my ear along with years of living in a household that pumped everything from jazz and classical to of course rap.

I started playing the piano from the ages of 8 to 13, quit and started playing football, but kept that creativity flowing with the pen, pencil, airbrush etc. I didn't really take this music thing serious until some of my peeps and even my girl wanted to know why the hell I kept playing instrumentals all the time or they would say who's that and I would lie, and make sure my screen saver was up or I wouldn't even show people what I was doing cause I didn't want people to hear what I was doing in fear of hate or discouragement. Once I actually realized how much fun I was having I didn't give a shyt what people thought unless they were into the music like I was or someone who knew what the hell they were talking about. Now I want to learn how to play the piano all over again cause I'm so into this music shyt and I'm looking to get all types of shyt now, sound modules, real studio monitors all types of different vsti's etc, etc. I'm even interested in engineering. I've always been a tech head from a pc standpoint being an IT major in college also helped so therefore I kinda picked up on shyt really quick it's never too late if you're doing it for the love, and not for the cash. Oh and I definitely can't front if it wasn't for this website, I wouldn't know alot of shyt, good luck. peace.

when i started making music 3 years ago i didnt know how to play any instrument and i never did music at school but i have produced 2 albums for a musician that have been released and a single out on a compliation.

well its not too late with pratice, trail an error and lots reading, mags and books .listening to other peoples stuff and try 2 figure out how they do that and all, i started to play drums at a very young age and started to play paino at age twelve but now i'm 18 but still have a lot 2 learn about beat making. there are certain things that ca'nt be taught, good beat making takes practice, a little music theory is a bonus if want to know how 2 read music thats a whole defferent line thats acctually a professional musicians role.
