If you're going the "do it yourself" route, I'd say start off by recording a couple of simple tracks first, tracks that won't be released on the mixtape and then seeing how well those come out when you try and master them yourself. It would be a major hassle if you mastered all your confirmed tracks and then they come out sounding less than adequate.
