Information

Everyone needs to start out, so dont feel weird asking - it's the only way you learn :). A mixer is used to take two inputs (sources of music, i.e. two turntables) and combine them into one. The type of music you mix will determine how you mix those two two sources together. What kind of music do you mix (this will give me a better idea of how to describe the use of the mixer).

kind of music

i would have to say Hip Hop or breaking beats

Well basically u need two turntables to be able to create a non stop flow of music, where on track flows into the other.
the mixer is used to control the dynamics of the two tracks and to facilitate smooth transition between them
for hip hop and breakbeat u wuld use the mixer to create scratch routines and also funky breaks.
for 550$ u can get two stanton str8-0's and a stanton mixer

Some Help On buying your stuff

With the kind of budget you have I would say you should go with some kind of a starter pack such as : Numark Battle Pack II. It is a very decent pack that will give you 2 Numark Turntables which are direct drive not belt driven which is a plus for you if your playing breaks and hip hop and planning to scratch...belts will not allow to scratch effectivly. You also get a Numark mixer that is not half bad at all , it is perfect if your just starting off. And on top of those you get 2 Numark moniters (speakers) which are a decent side and volume also comes with some crappy headphones that will work while your just starting off. That pack runs for about $500 you can get it off http://www.musiciansfriend.com or go to a guitar center or music store near you. I recomend that pack, because that is what I started off with and it worked out great. Other types to consider when starting are Gemini and Stanton. Possibly the Stanton Scratch pack would be another good choice. Once you get your stuff together with that and can beat match, scratch, and you are ready to move up. You will want to look into buying some Tech. Turn tables or something of that higher end sort. But as for now that is my advise. Hope it helps. If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me.
