I got some specific questions about Audio Interfaces...

I've been reading about Audio interfaces (AI). From what I've read, an Audio Interface is basically a high quality external soundcard? (correct me if I'm wrong)

I use a Shure PG42 condensor mic and Cool Edit Pro 2.0. I know I need an AI with Phantom Power. But how do I know which ones will work with CEP 2.0?

Also, are USB ones not recommended? From past experience, and other people, I learned USB isn't the best when it comes to good quality recording. And if it isn't USB, how do I connect it to my laptop? Firewire? Would I have to buy something else to be able to plug Firewire into my laptop?

And what do you think of Audio Interfaces with integrated pre-amps? Should I get an AI with a preamp, or an AI and a separate pre-amp? Are both necessary to have to get good quality recordings?

Extra info if needed: I also use FL Studio 9 to create beats. I don't do any live recording with instruments. And on CEP I mostly record Hip Hop/Rap vocals, some singing, and maybe some guitar.
