i think hes talking about the genre Grime...its a bit like garage...UK **** :D

my advice is just listen to some grime and work it out for yourself...theres no limits to what melodies or what tonality to use...try sampling as well

one thing u should do though, make sure theres a "drop" every 16 bars...and maybe a change every 8...this is just so that if u give it to an mc, he wont be like "what the ****...wheres the drop"

and also, focus on impact...make sure when the beat kicks in...u KNOW its kicked in..

Sample, sample, and sample again! The best way to make any dissonant sounding beat is to collect noise from your surroundings, and engineer the single beat with that sound. If you have access to a Triton, you might be able to load sounds you record yourself in, and sample it over a simple beat. Depends on what you want though, could you elaborate?

In grimey hip hop stuff there is usually a few things you'll notice if you listen to a beat made by RZA, 9th Wonder, Just Blaze or DJ Premiere.

1)The beats are usually in 12 bit.

2)Everything is sampled.

3)If a real instrument doesn't make the sound or isn't able to, it doesn't get used.

4)The drum line is usually very simple.
No claps, only snares. Hats on every other 16th.

Feel free to play around with it, it's your music, but these are just basic guidelines to get you started.

Listen to pirate radio or 1Xtra (Garage). Go to Grime/Garage venues in your area.

Here's a few basics:
* around 140BPM (sometimes tracks have a half-time feel)
* square bass
* the latest Grime stuff uses plenty of strings and weird violin sounds, also for bass lines
* all sorts of fcuked up fx sounds that make you giggle (think and feel rude bwoy London Jamaican style, big spliff and all that)

Most of the sounds are actually crisp, some even classy and not grimey at all. Just come to East London and live it.

good luck man

RZA runs his drums through a Sansamp.

lol at all the US people who dont know grime lol.
depends wot u aiming for, cos grime dun changed alot this year or 2, moving towards more sampled stuff wiv peeps like ghetto, scorcher an them.
they pretty much always either 140bpm (or equivilant 70bpm).
alot of the sampled stuff is made to sound more grime like with a bassline that has alot of attack on it(if that dont make sense then luk for tutorials an onfo on "synth LFO settings), so it kinda takes a second to impact but starts really low, if that makes sense!?
the unsampled beats, the kind that wiley an maniac produce, usually have a simple synth pattern, but with really busy drums, loadsa different claps an scattered snares.you just need to make sure theres plenty of low low bass.
download the low deep instrumental mixtape, or search for other grime instrumentals,an listne to the different layers. sound simple an easier said thatn done, but if u concentrate on listnening to jus one sound or 1 drums pattern ect, wiv a bit of practice u realise its not that difficult.

try this page to download bare grime beats.

I know Grime. I have to say I've only been listening to it for 6 years now though. I've just never tried to produce any of it. Frankly the newer stuff sounds so clean I don't know why it is called "Grime". I've got some other projects I'm working on though right now so once I'm done with those I will get on the Grime tip. I'm not trying to bit the UK stlye just put my own spin on it.

That's a good description right there. Maybe a few sound effects thrown in for good measure... Really you're just creating a certain mood for the MC to tear the beat up...

lol at the first guy "grimey beats". I guess UK got a long way 2 go b4 we officially on the map eh?

lol well aside from sampling you can learn your minor and dimished scales. they can play a big role in creating your own pieces.
how about some chords!!!!
one your keyboard hold down these 3 notes at one time!
A-C-E
Now move your hand down the keyboard and play these 3 notes!
G-Bflat-D
Move you hand up the keyboard and play
D-F-A
and then go back to the first chord.

play that little rift back and forth until you get it down and put a couple of kicks, some snares, and an open hihat. Lay down a cool bass melody and BLAM! your good to goo

there's some plugins out there, some free, that produce noise n vintage type audio effects... they can sometimes kick the time machine effect in on instruments and full tracks
