I know alot of people just rewire reason into another DAW to master their project, but Reason 5 has a mastering combinator so i believe you can master in it as well. Any tips, forums, books, anything would help thanks.

No mastering and it is possible to do both in Reasons - you just need to think and listen carefully as you get to the final stages.

@dreamer89: check mo grizzly's mastering tutorial also (he's a member here so search for him first and you'll find which thread he last posted it to)

Reason doesn't feature any serious tool for mastering. Their limter is a joke.

As my father used to say "it is a poor tradesman who blames his tools for a lack of quality in his work"

Essentially, we don't always get to choose the tools we use, so we need to know how to get the best out of them regardless of what the general opinion of them may be.

Their Limiter may well be a joke by others standards (but then that standard may also be a joke to others still) but you can program it to perform better than it does out of the box - that is what is being asked by the OP, how can I get the best out of the tools available in reason 5? So, let's answer that question rather than saying buy something else.

Because any other DAW has better stock plug-ins, using rewire is a good idea for mixing. Once done, just create a mastering session in your DAW.
This way you have the best of both systems. Reason is great as sequencer and audio sources. The DAW is better for mixing and mastering.

The MClass limiter isn't a mastering tool for the following reasons:

  • It has no separate L/R input gain.
  • The gain reduction display has only two LEDs for the 0 to -4dB range which is the most important when mastering. The -20 dB range is totally out of purpose for mastering.
  • The look ahead has only one 4ms value.
  • I didn't know that brickwall limiters have an attack time. What mean fast, mid or slow in ms? The plug-in never offers fine tunning. It just allows coarse values.
  • Same coarse and mysterious choices for release.
  • The soft clipper doesn't offer any specific unit. It is placed after the ouput gain which forbid any ouput ceilling.
  • No link option.
Even if you're an audio genius, this tool is too basic for a real mastering.
