I know you guys already seen many of these type of threads but I just cant seem to find how to do it, does any one know how to make it knock? Here is an example of what i'm looking for "SONNY DIGITAL/FUTURE SAME DAMN TIME BEAT MAKING VIDEO DJ LONDON LEHGO" just type that in on youtube.:shame:

two parts for it as far as I know. One is the kick drum. You need a nice thick kick drum. Keep the decay short on this one because this is gonna be the one that provides all of the attack.

2nd part is a sine wave pitched low. It'd be a good idea to keep the wave in key with the song too. Once you have that you can add a little bit of distortion to the sine wave to give it some character. Make sure on the sine wave that you turn down the attack so that you won't hear a boom when it comes in. The sine wave is only for the tail end.

Mix these two things together and you get that nice boomy kick drum

^^^Other waves will work also. Never really experimented with it, but I'd imagine waves like square and saw will give you more dynamics, which means you'll really be able to hear that 808. (Especially on small speakers.)

Never tried square, but a saw will work too. I think Xabition has a youtube video on how to do this.

i just made my own in nexus and change it however i want. only because i suck at making those .wav's sound good. or it may be because i'm a simple minded Fl user lol ;)

^^^I use Wav's in FL for my 808's. All I do is make the attack and the release real qucik. You also gotta take it into Edison, use it to find the pitch, and then make that the root note.

Those wav's are almost never in middle c, so if you use middle c as the root note (default) then it's gonna be out of key with your beat.

i have no problem gettin in em key. its just makin em not sound so muddy

I use Reason. So I just initialize Subtractor, Select a sine wave, lower the pitch and add a little resonance and distortion. Also shorten the attack

all this is telling me is. there is no right or wrong way. but there is something that we are all gettin from all these different ways. and that is......*drum roll*... an 808 we like lol

umm *scratches head*

1) I start with one that already has harmonic distortion/saturation (Sonic Specialist/Goldbaby/Lex Luger kit)
2) compress it with a high ratio (7.1 or 8.1)
3) sweep & boost between 100-160hz somewhere for attack

. . . and I get what I'm looking for.

I have like 4 808 mixer presets that I made so I cant even remember the exact settings.....I just load up an 808 WAV, load a preset in the mixer and tweak the knobs until it sounds how I want

I use a rotary high pass filter with the cutoff around 60 hz and sweep up the resonance till it jumps out...then shave the peak a bit with the sustain and play with the rest of the asdr before I add any effects...I also do a lot of the stuff in this thread depends on how lazy or how much initiative I feel like taking at the moment.

Wow it's kinda neat to see how everyone approaches things. Usually we don't get too technical in the Hip Hop section. lol

me i usually use a wav sample sometimes ill adjust the attack etc, i make sure and set the root note on trhe piano roll, as far as in my effects channel usually some eq and a bit crusher

I would suggest you try adjusting your eq and compression settings for your kick drums and 808 bass, adjust these settings until you hear the kicks knockin and your 808s clearly.
