where go guys like black milk. 9th and j dilla get their drums from? i know your gonna say vinyl but i need some more explanation, dre gets his drums from vinyl and his sound WAY differnt from these underground guys.
ive experramented with a couple of breaks on my fantom and they just arnt sounding like these. when i chop it all up they sound way too choppy, theirs are so clean sounding but all grimyand underground.
any pointers?
i soon plan to get battery3 or an mp or some sort of dedicated sampler for my drums and samples.

thanks alot
thomas

hmmmm................from wax, from modules, from kits, from layering, from compression, from distortion, from eq'ing, from other pros/friends, but most of all from EXPERIMENTING

ok well i just need help with drums from wax then...... ive herd that you cut it right where it begins and leave all of the "empty sound" until it reaches a new one, to keep the vintage drum feel. does that work? when i tried it it sounded wierd. haha know any thing about sampling on a fantom?

thanks
thomas

you have a good start to it. ADSR. Attack, Decay,Sustain,Release.

The trick to sampled drums. Different levels of each will affect how your drums sound. Just sampling something isnt the end all. Some times you also need to slow the sample down, change the pitch, layer it with other samples or whatever. The truth is, your going to have to do the ground work and experiment like the other guy said.

Then bulld your own custom library.

another thing to not make your drums sound so choppy is hide a drum break underneath your own drums., it keeps the "air" in between your own hits. sometimes i do that, sometimes not, it depends on how i chop my joints.

I'll give you a good start. "Queen B*tch" by Lil Kim. When the song 1st drops the perfect loop comes in. Chop it up and afterwards you'll understand the difference between getting good drums to begin with and getting crap that you have to tweak to death to sound decent.

I have too much free time. Nothing amazing, but here you go original and what I made out of it.

blk milk and Jay dee use a lotta drum breaks in there beats you can hear them underneath, but the freak em. Sometimes they are layerd like an above poster mentioned, and a lotta times, they are just plain chopped and the beat uses 3 and 4 of each element to create a pattern. I used breaks on all my beats on my page can you tell

Drumbreaks looped or chopped that compliment the sample.
Filtering and eqing the sample.

So,

Does Dr. Dre really sample his drums from vinyl? Or does he use real instruments in the studio or what? I always just thought he played real snares etc to get them sounding like that.

I think it's a bit of both. Most Producers like him and Kanye have made libraries of sounds they been working on for years. Look at Kanye now. We all remember that snare he 1st started out with (very high pitched one). But now you see him using more realistic sounding drums that fit the track better (imo)

The drum in "Xplosive" was the same queen b*tch sample I just posted. For the most part Dre uses stock drums. I don't see why you guys still find his drums so impressive in 2007. His quality surpassed alot of other material in 2001, but not even being cocky, I can easily match his quality with my current budget studio setup.

dre stuff has always been "above par". But the 2005-2007 he has really step his game up. compare "In the club" to "Outta Control".

Compare his 2001 album to get rich, get rich was just not a very well mixed album. Most of the tracks were recorded before 50 got the dael with interscope, so they made the whole album sound the same.

I'm and engineer, trust me, I was in awe when I heard The Marshal Mathers LP and Chronic 2001, but in 2007 anybody with Reason and a dynamics plug in suite can achieve "Dre's Mix Quality".

That's exactly what I was going to say. Another way to keep "air" between hits of your chopped up break is to keep your chops long, including the tail noise and air after the actual drum hit. This way, when you arrange your drums out using your samples from a dirty and dusty drum break, your hits will overlap and there will never be a silent part.

Good luck!

I think that pete rock has the best drums in hip hop... Listen to his youtube video on how he chops his drums to keep the air and life in them.

Im getting a drumset to fk with...

A Good Idea, but be warned though: You need a good drumset, good mics, and A GOOD DRUMMER to get a decent sound. 80%of the drummers out there lack the right attack. It's all in the way you hit a drum. makes all the difference. I've got a professional drummer that I'm working with, that's the way to go!
